Windy Day 8 Pointer

He isnt a giant, not even big in my opinion, but a good solid deer for me.

Hunted hard this past weekend (Nov 12-13) which was our opening weekend of rifle season. Hunted saturday morning with no luck. Saw a few deer but nothing big enough.

The weather forcast for sunday morning was not good at all. High winds, with gusts up to 40 mph, and temps in the mid 60s, but I decided to go out anyway.

My cousin decided to set with me that morning, so we decided to hunt in a blind on the edge of a cut bean field with two large chunks of timber on each end, with a long overgrown waterway running out of the timber that we were setting in the edge of. Historically in the past, deer skirt the edge of the waterway moving from once piece of timber to the other. A couple days prior I had found several large rubs in the area as well.

As daylight broke we had a little doe come right past the blind. After she left we didnt see anything for nearly two hours. The wind was howling and we had just about gave up on seeing anything else, when my cousin spots a deer heading our way across the field. I get my binos on him, and recognize him as a buck we have pics of in velvet. He was 300 yards out but closing fast at a slow trot. I decided that given my lack of time to hunt this year because of living an hour and a half from home at college, and the great character this deer has, I couldnt pass him up. He continued down the edge of the waterway and offered me a 50 yard shot. He only made it about 40 yards before going down.

This deer proves the point that regardless of weather conditions, when its the rut, you gotta be out there hunting when you can. I would have never believed that I would see a deer like this on a warm windy day like it was.
