fly
Do it. You don't need to sped a ton of money either. I bought the eTrex Venture at Cabelas for 99.00, but the sale just ended. Bass Pro still has it for 109.00. Garmin® eTrex® Venture® HC Handheld GPS Unit | Bass Pro Shops Here's the great thing... I found a website with free maps that typically go for 100 plus. I tried these topo and trail maps and they work great (I have a PC). I find areas on the map (on my home computer) that I think will be a good hunting area. Then I connect my Garmin handheld GPS to the computer and transfer the points - bang! The handheld unit will guide me to within 10 feet of that spot. If I get there and a certain tree is a little futher i can mark that tree on the handheld unit and it saves it. When I get back home I can upload it to my computer. Really neat stuff. wtnhunt
Cool stuff out there for sure Frank. Figure some folks have gps apps in their smartphones, but dunno about mapping options like you are talking about. Would not mind having a "handheld" unit here, but our nuvi has a pedestrian mode that worked out fair for us in Wyoming last year.
Joe Garcia
I was just thinking about this today.
Shaun_300
That's a pretty good deal Frank. Like the map website too. I already have the topo maps for all of Canada in my Garmin Oregon 450T, see they have the snowmobile trails for Ontario in a map, I'll have to let my buddies know about that one. johnf
Only problem with phone apps is that if you lose your signal you are out of luck. I've got the venture and it's great. The first time I used it after playing around in the yard for about an hour it took me staight to my stand in the dark with no moon or flashlight. I actually bumped into my stand befor I saw it using the GPS. They are awsome. I also found some free maps online with it that were better than the Garmin maps. Stinger-Hunter
That is one of the last items I would like to purchase. I think that with the addition of so much public land that I'm hunting.. I might as well get one. Private land - had no need for one, especially since I was only 100-200 yards from my stand. I think next year will require it. Thanks for the info
