Darius
Hello everyone, Im new to the forums. I have an interesting topic to tell.. November 26th..(This year). It's about 2:00 p.m., Im hunting with my father at his friends farm. We have been hunting since about 6:00 A.M. and haven't seen a thing, but there is big buck activity in the area. At 2:00 p.m. we hunt a box stand in a ditch over looking corn and woods behind it. My dad gets a call from his friend (the guy who land we hunt on), his friend is going to cut the corn so be ready. About 15 minutes later, there picking the corn. We're ready for some action. As hours pass by, we haven't seen nothing, you would expect to see the deer move from the corn to the woods..So I decide to move to a stand about 80 yards up a hill in the woods. Near this stand, there has been MASSIVE rubs and we decide to put a scent wick with Code Blue Buck Urine out on a tree near some rubs, this is the rut, to see if any mature bucks were smart enough to stay from the corn while picking and stay in the woods. I decide to grunt for about 10 minutes and no activity is seen. Im guessing it is maybe 3:30ish. Dark is around 5:30, so action should pick up.. Then I suddenly realize this is the rut and I have a fawn call. So I start working the call because there is a high doe to buck ratio where we hunt and I have heard the fawn bawls just reel in big mature does.. So not 15 minutes after Im calling.. To my right, there were squirrels playing, so I hear a noise what happens to be a big doe and a fawn trotting to me, I am in shock...thought they were squirrels. So me and the mama make eye contact and I freeze.. She did approach downwind of me because calling deer most hunters realize this. I was praying she looks the other way and doesn't wind me because even though I sprayed thoroughly with Scent Killer 99%.. anything could happen. I am surprised I called her in because I was actually just calling for the heck of it because I was just bored to be honest. The big doe turns the opposite way of me.. I reach for my 20. Gauge shotgun with a scope on and I did not care about the fawn. The doe walks about 3 yards and stops. I aim for her lungs, right behind the shoulder..Bang! I thought I hit her good because she jumped, ran 4 yards and stopped.. I searched frantically for a hole in her because deer sometimes behave this way after being shot.. Nothing! The fawn was right behind her.. and the doe just stood there. There was no way I could miss. She was 15 - 18 yards away from me and I have been practicing so that is an easy kill for me. I reload slow as she is frozen, then my shell pops out the chamber and clanks against the seat Im in. And there off. It seemed like a race to the corn patch as the 2 deer ran down the hay filled hill.. My father calls and asks did I shoot. I said yes and I tell them there going to him.. He said something and the next thing I hear is nothing but wind and 4 gun shots lol (His gun can only hold three). He actually dropped his phone because the deer scared him later he told me. He said he shot the big doe because she buckled and he was even shooting at the fawn. I pick up my shell, and rush to where he is. He is in the corn searching, and blood is everywhere on the corn! We call my dad's friend (the guy who land we hunt on) to help us with the search. We searched about what seemed like an hour and the trail went cold and darkness was upon us. We had to search the next day in fear that coyotes would catch her. The next morning, we hunted from 6 - 8 a.m. and started looking for the doe. We found more blood from where it went cold and led deeper into the corn and we searched for maybe 30 - 45 minutes because I had to go to a conference which interfered with the hunt. So we had to cut the tracking short... Later the same night, my dad gets a call from his friend and says they found the doe.. They were finish cutting the corn and found her nearly at the upper edge of the corn. My dad killed the big doe with his 12 gauge Winchester but came at a price. The coyotes got her and bit her leg off and ate elsewhere. I say atleast we got a shot, its been a while I tell my dad on the phone. Before I hang up.. I say, let's take off my scope going into second season, hopefully it helps..So guys Im off to Louisiana to hunt and spend Thanksgiving there.. I will be taking my .270 and hopefully harvest my first deer the second season. Thank you for your time and God Bless -Darius
Hoosierbuck
Wow, that's a mouth full bud. Could be at that close a range, you shot under her due in part to the discrepancy between the bore of the gun and the scope. Did that to a coyote, TWICE, right under my stand one time. Real close-aim a little high. Welcome to the forums, and good luck in Louisiana. HB
