need2hunt
Well I knew it was coming but I finally got the official word yesterday when we went out to pull a couple of our stands... the owner of the property I hunted the most past away last year right before season and now the land has been broken into 3 different lots and sold off. I have one very small chance as the neighbor to the east bought the back woods (40 acres) and another property adjoining that (approx 300 acres). This neighbor already owns 550 acres so now he's got about 900 acres total. I used to hunt the 550 before they bought that, I talked to him a the first couple years about hunting it but he has said no. He did give me permission to retrieve any deer that crosses into his property and also permission to shoot (bow) over his fenceline form one of my stands thats along his border. They've lived there for 6 years now and every year I stop in to talk with them and let them know hunting season is coming around, let them know what I'm driving and make sure they have my business card in case they need to talk to me about anything. Hopefully being a respectful hunter will pay off as now I'll be going to see if they will let me hunt there land this year.

Tominator
Re: Lost Hunting Land That's too bad Gary. But, I think you have the right idea, being a good neighbor and all. Who knows, maybe he'll have a change of heart someday.

magnatecsteve
Re: Lost Hunting Land That's a bummer!! I hope my spot lasts for a while yet. I grew up next to the poeple who own the land I hunt, and I'm the only one they trust to hunt their land. They said when they're gone it goes to the kids and they're not supposed to touch it since it's in CRP, Classified Forrest, Classified Habitat. Hope their kids hold up to what the will states, she added in the will that I would have hunting rights after they pass. Hope you are granted permission on the neighbors land, sounds like plenty of room to hunt on. Persistance pays off! Obviously you've established that you're an ethical hunter so maybe he'll give you a chance!

longislandhunter
Re: Lost Hunting Land good luck, hope you get to hunt that property. Same thing happened to me 2 years ago when a friend of mine sold off his 200 acre farm to a private hunting club. I still remember taking my stands out of those woods for the last time, a sad day. I did find other land to hunt on, but somehow it's still not the same. Good luck to you.

Rhino
Re: Lost Hunting Land That is a bummer Gary. Hope you get permission from the neighbor that has the 900 acres now. Maybe you can work a deal to hunt just part of it. Sure can't hurt to ask.

Doc
Re: Lost Hunting Land It's just a sign of the times. That situation is certainly not unique or even very rare. I have been hunting for close to 50 years. Just imagine how many great hunting spots I have seen go out of hunting production. It's not a condition that is ever going to get any better, and eventually will lead to the demise of hunting for the common man. Doc
David_218
Re: Lost Hunting Land "Need2Hunt", I am sure sorry to hear that you lost your hunting woods, as there is a lot of that going on thesedays. I've lost several hunting areas in the past 10 years or so, and most of these nice hunting woods were turned into housing subdivisions. Sounds like the property owner is getting ready to do that. I tell you, the very best thing to do is buy your own woods as then you will always have a place to hunt. Many of us are going to wake up one bright sunny opening day and have no place to hunt, due to urban spraw or other developments have taken our hunting land away. Alisha
Re: Lost Hunting Land Ah man what a shame. Same thing happened to my dad and I a few years back when the guy who owned the property we hunted on died of a brain aneurism and his wife sold the property to some big shot who won't let ANYONE hunt there and plans to make the 900-some odd acres into a golf course. Last I heard, there were deer running over top of each other out there. Good luck to you on getting permission from that paticular land owner you mentioned. Doc
Re: Lost Hunting Land The stories of lost hunting land are getting quite common these days. It's becoming a real problem. Here in NY, the DEC has put this problem on their next "to do" list. They recognize that part of the "diminishing hunter" syndrome involves the rapidly fading access to prime hunting lands. I'm sure they also are not too happy with having a lot of land locked away from their ability to manage the herds. Don't ask me what they have planned. Probably nothing yet since the activity was described as a near future activity. Personally, I absolutely can't think of a single thing that won't encroach on landowners rights or taxpayers wallets. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with. Doc
Doc
Re: Lost Hunting Land Does anybody have any real good ideas on how to solve this problem of diminishing hunting land? If you were heading up a task force to increase hunter access for your state's game management department, What kind of suggestions would you put forward for consideration?
