muggs
So, we're hunting my buddy's uncle's land. I had an eventful opening morning of Ohio's gun season. I got a doe in the evening, but the morning was even more eventful. I found a huge 3-point shed near my stand (actually kicked it with my foot in the dark and was lucky to even notice it). It's huge for coming from a 6-pointer. A lot of mass, and he's going to be a nice deer next season. I could see my friend's uncle from my stand. He was over my left shoulder about 300 yards away. He was up in a 16 foot high wooden ladder stand he must have built about 20 years ago. It was rickety at best and we all told him he shouldn't climb up there (he's 72 years old, but still moves well). Sure enough, right around 8am I hear a crash and I no longer see his blaze orange in his stand. So, I climbed down and ran over...he's laying there. I called his nephew and helped him to his feet. Luckily, he just pulled a muscle in his leg. That's not the worst part of the story though. On my way back to my stand, as I came over a little ridge and could see the area I was hunting I see a monster 10 pointer standing about 30 yards from my stand. He hears me and takes off. I would say he was 170ish and the biggest buck I'mve seen while hunting. I'm still bummed about that, but all in all, it was a good day. Stange to find a shed this early in Ohio. dbHunterNY
well at least you know the buck's around. many people see or hear of a big buck before they shoot it. maybe you'll still have a chance at him. good to see the uncle made out okay too. being that old and that high up, he's lucky to have just a pulled muscle. the shed is cool... i don't really shed hunt, but i am around in the woods. haven't ever found one actually. i've seen dead deer remains with antlers, but no sheds. muggs
Yeah, I gotta post a pic of this shed. It would have easily been the biggest 6 pointer I've ever seen if I would have seen it walking during bow season. He'll be a monster deer next year. For 72, my buddy's uncle is in really good shape. He actually does senior triathlons. I'm sure that helped his cause. Edited November 30, 2011 by muggs
dbHunterNY
pictures sound like a good idea. sounding like it's a nice find. i can't agrue with ya about physical condition preventing further injury. i know of young and old where that's come into play. one guy was even in a motorcycle accident and the doctor said his previous conditioning saved his life. ruttinbuc
That was quite an eventful hunt. I couldn't imagine what was going through your mind when your buddy's uncle went down. Too bad about the big buck. Things happen for a reason. Maybe he'll show up as even a bigger buck next time. Nice find on the shed.
