Broadhead

Yep, that was my last Rage deer. After sticking 1 in the shoulder blade and losing it, I'm off the Rage (or any mechanical head) bandwagon.

Yep, if I have a complaint on mechanicals, it's penetration issues. That dog of a fawn I shot down at Michael's was basically point blank, and only got pass-thru after it took 3 or 4 steps.

I did jump on the rage bandwagon too a couple years ago. I lost one doe that was my fault, but got a great pass through on a one-sided 8pt and I think only one blade deployed, exit hole less than one inch slit, so I never shot them again, even though he only made it 40 yards.

I killed 2 does opening weekend though this year with the NAP bloodrunner. Those things can't fail to expand by design. Not saying I'm hooked on them, but just another good choice.

this is probably not going to be a popular answer but i was not happy with the penetration with the rage. i did recover every deer i shot with the rage but i never get a pass through. shooting from elevated stands it takes awhile to get a blood trail. my son started bow hunting this year. we did not recover the first deer he shot with the rage. me and three of my buddies combed the area and found no blood. i didn't see the shot impact but did see the arrow sticking out of the deer as it ran off. poor penetration for sure. i know it could have hit the shoulder blade. anyway i was out of broad heads. went to pick up some more. after spending alot of time looking over the options i bought two packs of easton terminator 2 broad heads. six bucks a pack. used the first pack to practice with. they grouped just fine at 20 30 and 40. took them to the woods. the boy took a doe with one. pass through and plenty of blood trail. i took a doe with same results. i guess the moral of the story is any broad head will do as long as they group for you. at 6 bucks for three i found mine.

Here is another not so popular answer.

If your bow is not shooting fix blades accurately then it is not properly tuned. Going to mechnicals due to this reason is just covering for a bigger issue. Shooting an untuned bow and adding mech equals disaster due to even worse penetration.

Food for thought.

That's a great point! I paper tuned both my bows. I have awesome accuracy and the pentration is not a problem! I have practiced and can group my broadheads up to 60 yrds. PRACTICED being the main word. Although the cow elk I shot last year was around 55 yrds, and I had a complete pass through! I would have never figured that on an elk! I buy rubber O-rings from Lowe's and it allows me align my blades with the fletchings.
