ckrich
I was fortunate enough to get the entire first week of rifle season off this year, and I really spent some time in the stand. The rut was in full swing and deer were moving like crazy. I had already taken my 9 point with my bow and a doe with the muzzleloader, so the freezer was filling up and the pressure was off, so to speak. I was picking up my little brother on Thanksgiving to go hunting, so I decided that unless a monster buck stepped out I was going to save my tags for when we hunted together. The Saturday opener came and went with good deer movement, and the heartbreak of not being able to recover a beautiful 140 class 10 point that my buddy shot. Sunday I decided to go hunt the place where I took my bow buck. Both of the tree stands that I have on the property are set back in the timber a little ways, and are too constricted for hunting with a rifle. So I decided to go sit on the edge of the timber and watch the wheat field it borders. Luckily, there was a massive old tree that had fell over that I could hunker down in, and I propped up some bark and branches to give myself a little cover and break up my outline. Dawn broke, and there were does already on the wheat about 200 yards to the west. Around 7:30 a doe comes trotting out of the tree line to my east, obviously agitated about something. Sure enough, I see horns in the trees. For the next half hour or so I watch the doe get harassed by the buck, a main frame 10 with two broken tines on the right side(I guestimate he would score 135 or so), and then they fade away into the trees to the west. There are still does out on the wheat, and I watch as 8 different bucks move in and out of the trees trying to check the does.Around 8:30 the does on the wheat suddenly scatter. Out of the timber comes a doe at full run wtih a big buck right behind her, it's the pair I'd seen earlier. They run across the wheat about 300 yards out, and make a turn my way. And when I say "my way", I mean they were headed right for me. In seconds they are just yards away, and I can see the whites of the does' eyes. The buck digs in harder to try and cut her off, running up on her side. She takes the opportunity and quickly changes course, narrowly missing the tree I'm sitting in. The buck is closer to the middle of the tree, can't turn to follow, and slides to a stop not 10 feet in front of me. He stands there, panting hard, for about 20 seconds and then slips away into the woods after the doe. By far the coolest experience I have ever had while deer hunting! The Friday after Thanksgiving, little brother and I go back to the wheat field with hopes that the big boy will still be around. We get into the stand early in the afternoon and settle in. We didn't have to wait long, as a doe comes out and beds down on the edge of the wheat about 150 yards to the west. A few minutes later we see a buck working along thru the woods to the east, never giving us a clear shot, and watch as he beds down about 120 yards out. After an hour, and much debate on which deer he wants to shoot, Chase decides that we will wait for the buck. Well we didn't have to wait much longer, because the buck stood up and started walking our way! Holding steady with a solid rest, Chase squeezed off a perfect 80 yard shot on the goofy 8 point! I couldn't have been more proud if it was my own son that had made the shot! The next day, I was able to make take a big bodied 8 point. My uncle shot this 13 point the night before Thanksgiving(sorry about the poor quality photo)And Dad took this great buck on opening morning. Our family has had a blessed season! Archery, Muzzleloader, and Rifle. Congrats on all the nice deer. Specially the first for you little bro.
