Strut10
My bro was hunting the Strut10 Ranch on Thursday. He called me to tell me he had found a dead buck. The deer was the one my Mrs. had named "Chinese Eyes". I spent around 140 hours in a tree the last 2 weeks of our archery season trying to get a look at this deer. I have trail-cam pics of him at 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 years. He is the buck Lil Strut passed on last rifle season because his rack was broken up. I REALLY wanted Lil to arrow this deer this year. But his hunting time was really limited. I never saw this deer until a week after archery season as I was driving to breakfast on a Sunday morning. Had my camera but he was too quick to get away. Anyhoo....... he's dead. Appears that someone arrowed him (from VERY close range) too high and too far back. Took him a few weeks to run down and die. Sickening. What a waste.1.52.53.5Thursday

Strut10
Got to do a little daylight examination of this deer today. What appeared to be an arrow entry hole high, right under the spine at the back of the ribcage, is not an arrow OR bullet hole. After skinning the hide back off of the wound, it appears to be a tine hole. It's about .30 caliber, clean and not bruised or bloodshot around it at all. I think this buck was killed by another deer. Ravin R10 man
I can believe that...more bucks die that way than we care to know..
hoosierhunter
That's a shame, but it does look like he has blood in his nose in the one pick. I'm guessing the wound wasn't fresh that you saw though from the story.
MUDRUNNER
Man, that's a shame. He didn't look like much at 1 or 2 years old, but really turned out to be hack of a deer.
Strut10
Well..............again, the verdict on cause of death has changed. Just getting the chance to post this now. But RT member Uncle John did a VERY detailed PM on this deer a couple days after I did my initial examination. Turns out, this deer was shot nearly broadside with an FMJ. Could have been a .223 or a 7.62x39. But definitely shot with a non-expanding, small or medium caliber bullet. Some of you may recall Daisy, our 3 1/2 year old pure albino doe that met the same fate several years back. I'm really starting to wonder how many other of the bucks I've been trying to keep track of and lost have met this same end ??
wtnhunt
Man that really stinks Don. Poachers ruin so much for people who try to do right, can definitely understand the frustration there, and yep remember your story on "daisy". With so many different people slipping in on properties around us wonder here too what happens with some of the bucks we get pics of that just disappear. dbHunterNY
sorry to hear it Don. it happens all over, but that FMJ deal is just making it worse. That's just careless using a round like that on deer.
