First, can a non-resident apply for a first season rifle tag in a restricted unit? I am looking at units in the region around unit 500, these all look to be fairly low preference point units to draw and I was wondering about the elk densities in the national forests around unit 500. Like anyone I would like to take a trophy bull, but am more interested in getting out and learning about elk and hunting out west. Any advice would be appreciated. m gardner Posted December 22, 2011 Report Share Posted December 22, 2011 You can apply anywhere you want and will get a preference point if unsuccessful. The OTC units are managed primarily for a high yield of animals, not trophies so let that be yur guide. If it's draw for 1st seaon but OTC for archery and the 2nd and 3rd seaons it's not a good bet usually. Most of the elk go to private or some hellhole at the first sign of pressure too and they think nothing of a 5 to 10 mile walk. It's quite an education you'r ein for. God bless.
