hoosierhunter
I really enjoy chasing mature whitetails and to chase mature deer you have to pass immature deer. Sometimes that can be a tough thing to do when a 3 year old is over 160 inches. Most of my hunting buddies think it's crazy to let a deer like this walk. Maybe they are right, but then again hunting based on age instead of antler changes your entire prospective of hunting if you really commit to it. dbHunterNY
i only wish i could. i've actually started to hunt old does. there's a few that are pretty hard to kill. they're over 5.5 yrs old and know every stand site on the farm. if i was kill one of those does opposed to a 150+" 2.5 yr buck (if there ever could be) hunters around here wouldn't think anything of it. however, slaying the potential world class buck prematurely would make me a great white hunter. Adjam5
I applaud your efforts to make your deer herd into the herd you want it to be. You are fortunate to have the land and opportunity to make that happen. Many are happy just to be able to see a 160class deer afield and you let them walk. That is dicipline and determination on your behalf. This is my management plan. Where I hunt here in suburban Rockland county NY(40 miles north from NYC) I make it a point to shoot the big ole molly's (does) when opportunity presents. Where I hunt in Sullivan cty NY. I make it a point to shoot the does who have not yet reached 80lbs by Novembers season. We call the little ones skippers. We have a state mandated 3 on one side antler restriction(the 4th year) that seems to be working. Less bucks are being shot , but better quality ones are being taken. We have always had a no spike rule on our land, even before the AR's. Growing big deer takes time and you are willing to make the scarifices it takes to have your QDM implemented. Good Luck with your plans and hunt safe.
hoosierhunter
You are fortunate to have the land and opportunity to make that Definitely the Midwest can produce great deer. This particular property is only 100 acres. We are fortunate to have sanctuary nearby but we do not have any neighbors that partake in management. That's the real scary part. It's tough bc this deer is bigger than what I've killed but at the same time he is a very special animal for his age.
