bowhunter97
Hey guys i am bored at the house so i decide to put up this thread. So i was wondering what you guys think is the best all around caliber? I'd say its a 30-06. I say this because it can shoot almost any grain bullet from small Rabbit loads all the way up to Elk or Moose sized loads.
doubleA
That question is asked and argued about alot here in forums and hunting camps. There is no "best" anything as different folks will have different wants and needs thus will have different opinions of what "best" is. With that said I covered my bases and have a little of everything.
wtnhunt
Totally a matter of opinion. For what I do, the .270 has worked fairly well for me. That said, think the .30-06 is probably the most versatile with so many options it gives.
m gardner
Most of the guys I've met who hunt all over usually use some sort of 300 magnum like the 300 win mag or weatherby. If I had to have one rifle for sporting use it would be the 300 win mag.
bowhunter97
Yea everyone has thir own oppinion.
Shaun_300
Yep everyone has their own opinion, my personal opinion I'd pick the .300 WSM or .300 Win Mag. Great long range caliber and about as versatile as they come. Anything from pulverizing ground hogs and coyotes to shooting bears and moose. Strut10
Guess it all depends on what your definition of "all around" is. If by "all around" that's what you really mean, then there's little argument it would be one of the .375's........... H&H, Weatherbys, RUM........you pick. The .375's are African dangerous game legal and capable yet can be loaded down to handle about any smaller critter as well.
dbHunterNY
i have two rifles chambered in 30-06. i think they work. that said i don't plan on hunting any larger bear species or african dangerous game in the near future. also, i don't handload myself and buy ammo off the shelf. i'm not very recoil shy. so with that said the 30-06 could be. if you can kill a cape buffalo with a recurve then you can kill one with an 30-06. that being said and situations beyond the needs i mentioned, i think i'd go with a little more fire power on tap and load down for the lighter game. piece of mind and knowing that you got equipment that's completely sufficient is everything. all you need to do then is focus on what you have to do to make the shot count. Jeramie
Another vote for the old .30-06. Granted there are better tools for different jobs but all around the .30-06 with handloads can do about anything.
killer711
you cant go wrong with the ole 06!!
johnf
Best "All Around" depends on where you're around. If I was going to Africa I would want something a bit bigger than an 06, but around my parts it's more than enough. My biggest gun is a 308 and it's all the gun I need. I generally hunt with a 223 or 243 though.
