WNY_Whitetailer
I have been assembling parts to build another AR. This one will be in 6.8SPC and will be of use during the whitetail season and to take on the impending pig invasion that is being forecasted for my home state of NY as well as for some departmental training. First, I ordered a Spike's Tactical stripped lower receiver. Then, I found a deal on a 3-10x40 Bushnell 3200 Elite scope and ordered a Burris P.E.P.R 1" quick disconnect scope mount. I ordered a complete upper from AR15 Performance.com in 6.8. Here are some of the specs from their website: 18" SPR mid-weight 416 stainless 6.8mm barrel, 1 in 11.25 " twist 5R rifling- .800" UTG, .750 GB, .700 muzzle 6.8X43 Chamber (high performance spec .100 freebore) 5/8-24 threaded muzzle ITS flash hider Single rail gas block Mid-Length length gas system Shrouded (full ramp) carrier with properly staked carrier key 9310 alloy super bolt M4 upper receiver with white T mark etching Extended M4 Feed Ramps on receiver and barrel extension to aid feeding Mil Spec charge handle The upper is on back order until the end of this month or some time in to February as they are waiting on barrels. I also ordered a Spike's Tactical Enhanced Lower Parts Kit that comes with an ambidextrous safety, a Spikes Battle Trigger, and anti-rotation trigger and hammer pins, as well an an Ergo grip along with the usual assortment of mil-spec parts. A Magpul ACS Stock rounds out the AR... Here is a pic of the progress on the lower... I'll update the pics when I have the gun completed assembled. I might even have it camo dipped to make it uniquely mine. Edited January 10, 2012 by WNY_Whitetailer
dbHunterNY
so with that Magpul stock and the ITS flash suppressor, don't you have to pin the mag? haven't gotten an AR yet so i'm not very up to date on the NY AR restrictions. WNY_Whitetailer
I am an LEO and this gun will be used for training as well as other uses so it is legal for me to possess for now. When I retire, the gun will have to be neutered. Pin the stock, cut and crown the barrel, sell the over 10 capacity mags.
WNY_Whitetailer
I am also thinking of having this gun camo dipped as well...
dbHunterNY
alright i'm with you now. yea it'd just about kill me to do that, but it beats going to prison i suppose. i was thinking normally one couldn't have over 10 rounds period and you were only allowed up to 2 of 3; unpinned mag, flash suppressor, or collapsible stock. anyway i like this build #2 too. eventually when i build one i'll add an offset red dot like a Burris Fast Fire mounted to the float tube for close shooting. that is if a scope goes on it. WNY_Whitetailer
It's ok, I am not able to retire for another 15 years anyway...
wtnhunt
Good luck with the build, looks like a good start. How do you like the "spikes" lower? One of these days I am going to pick up a couple lowers.
WNY_Whitetailer
Wtnhunt, this is my second Spikes lower. They are the same as most other mil-spec lowers I am guessing. The last build I put together was a Spikes lower with a Daniel Defense LPK and an Adam's Arms 5.56 piston upper...It locks up tight like a bank vault. It is a much tighter fit than my Bushmaster rifle. Here's a pic:
Adjam5
Very nice build. The 6.8 has piqued my interest. A heavier bullet with good ballistics also. I too have been tinkering with my AR's. A Colt, Bushmaster and a Stag. Adding lots of accesories to my M4. I am now in the process now of purchasing tools, lower/upper reciever block. For bench/vice work. As far as the 922r( NYS AWB) restrictions go. What was left out was that you can have all of the "banned stuff" if it is mounted on a pre ban lower. Looking forward to your next build. Check out BravoCompanyUSA.com for some great AR items. I reccomend the Mod4 Charging handle. Good Stuff. Be safe at work. dbHunterNY
i knew about the preban mags, but not the preban lower. haven't read up that much yet. anderson manufacturing has a different idea with their RF85 coating on all the working parts. clean it and run it dry with no oiling. not sure what direction i'd go with an AR when the time comes. there's a lot more choices every day. wtnhunt
Wtnhunt, this is my second Spikes lower. Remembered reading your post on the other build, was not sure if that one was also on a spikes lower. Had a dpms .308 built for me a while back, considered buying a couple lowers back then. The 6.8 looks to be a fairly versatile round, be sure to post us some feedback.
WNY_Whitetailer
Just waiting on my upper from www.ar15performance.com...His barrel manufacturer is holding him up therefore he is held up with the upper. I'll take it to the range when it is finished to break it in and give a report at that time.
WNY_Whitetailer
Received my upper today...The Spikes Tactical lower was already assembled so all I had to do was slap the upper and lower together and mount the Burris P.E.P.R. and the Bushnell 3-10x40 Elite 3200 scope. The only thing left to do now is to get to the range and shoot it. I have 200 rounds of Hornady 110 grain BTHP ammo just waiting to go. Edited February 17, 2012 by WNY_Whitetailer

WNY_Whitetailer
Just ordered some McNett Camo Form Tape to fix that when hunting season comes around. Digital camo was the cheapest.
wtnhunt
Looks good. Hope it shoots real well for you.

WNY_Whitetailer
Thanks guys...I weighed it earlier using the wife's bathroom scale. It came in at around 8.2 lbs as pictured. The magazine is not loaded.
dbHunterNY
Just ordered some McNett Camo Form Tape to fix that when hunting season comes around. Digital camo was the cheapest. yea that's good stuff. i use it and in different camo patterns. it says it can be washed, but i've tried. it doesn't stick to itself nearly as well after. haven't tried just rinsing it or using my laundry detergent that's carbon safe. stuff works though. WNY_Whitetailer
Good to hear...I just bid on some snow camo tape as well.
WNY_Whitetailer
Ditched the ACS stock in favor of the STR...Same cheek weld, slightly lower weight and a reversible push button QD sling mount. I decided that I did not need the storage compartment of the ACS. I use the battery tubes to store some extra foam ear plugs, just in case...I also added an IKH rear single point sling attachment. I'm not sure that I like that one though. I might swap it out down the road for a Magpul unit. I also have two quick release sling swivels just in case I want to run a two point sling while hunting...The Badger Ordnance Tactical Latch was also added due to the scope mount... WNY_Whitetailer
I guess that I never followed up after my range trip. The attached target shows an 8 shot 100 yard group. I attribute the flyer to the nut behind the trigger. This group was the last of 40 rounds that I shot when I took this gun to the range for the first time. I also included a picture of the gun with the camo form tape applied for hunting. Edited March 15, 2013 by WNY_Whitetailer
