Looking to get my first handgun,I hve shot several over the yers of course but what I think I want/need is a .357 sig Glock 31. I'm wanting a bigger caliber even .44 mag if its feesable. Any suggestions or warnings of what to get and what to avoid? Trying to keep price of ammo in mind as well, I dont mind spending $500 on a good pistol but I dont want to be dropping $40 on ammo. This gun will be used for occasional carry, home defense and occasional play.

Best all around hand gun IMO is a Glock 19. With the right defence ammo you shouldn't have to worry. I've read some studys that show smaller calibers are better because ammo is cheaper and you practice more, reduced recoil translates to more hits on a target. With a good heavy hollow point, expantion is good and should do you fine. Another option would be to buy the .357 sig and get a 9mm barrel at midwayusa or some other place. Then you can practice with the cheap stuff and carry the good stuff. Best of both worlds maybe. I think those barrels cost around $100. Considering you can get bulk 9mm a lot cheaper, 3-4 trips to the range shooting 9mm might pay for the barrel.

I agree with John. I have a Glock 32 and ammo has gone up too much to shoot very often just for fun. I would not buy the 357 sig just for the heck of it. I would go with a 9mm if you plan on shooting a lot otherwise I would get a 40 caliber and buy the 357 sig barrel from lonewolf to shoot on occasion. For a first handgun i would not go for the sig. ammo is around 30 a box of 50. Maybe even consider a revolver for your first gun. I wouldn't mind having something like a Taurus revolver model 65 (357man 4" barrel) or a new smith and wesson m&p pistol. They are priced pretty good right now.

If you plan to use the gun for "occasional" carry and play, I'm thinking the cost of ammo should be a secondary consideration to the gun's ability to stop a fight in a home defense scenario.

There is no real good argument against the Glock platform. It flat-out works.....every time.

I opted for the G29 compact 10mm as my "constant companion". It's VERY concealable, VERY accurate, incredibly easy to shoot and handle for a powerhouse round in a smallish pistol, and if 11 rounds of 10mm won't stop the fight, you probably shoulda run in the first place.

Your standard Remington, UMC, American Eagle, etc. ammo for the 10mm runs $25-$30/box of 50 rounds. More than 9mm, for sure. But you're getting a WHOLE LOT more horsepower on target in return for your money.

Somethin' to think about anyways.................

I believe for now Im going to go with the full size glock in either a 9mm, .40, or .45 I know a full size glock isn't going to be ideal for concealment but why stop with one gun right? I believe what I'm going to do is find a place around Knoxville that has pistols that I can rent to see what caliber I like shooting best as well as taking ammo price into consideration. Later I will look for a smaller probably revolver type pistol for carry after I take the conceal carry course. Thanks for the input guys anyone else has one keep it coming.

The G23 compact .40 S&W is the best tradeoff between the 9mm and 10mm Glocks. It's VERY concealable, very accurate, very easy to handle and the ammo will cost you less........hence you'll shoot more.

Not sure if you'd be happy with a full size Glock. They are NOT the ultimate in concealability..........more of a duty/hunting weapon.

Like you said.........get your mitts on a variety and see what suits YOU.

The Glock is a good choice and if you get the 40 cal you can get Lone Wolf conversion barrels for $100.00 from Dillon Precision in Scottsdale, Az. If you get the 9mm Glock you can't convert them to a bigger case head. The triggers are a bit of a challenge but an $8.00 ZEV spring kit and a 3.5 pound connector for $15.00 will fix that. Here's my Glock 35 with the 357 SIG barrel. It hurts old arthritic hands.
