abrown
Does anyone hunt big horn or know much about em? I'm looking into where'd be the best places or the more favored units. Rocky Mountain big horn. Montana looks to be the cheapest, but not too familiar.
Ravin R10 man
Check out Eastman's hunting mag they got all info you needor call them they know what you are looking for Eastmans’ Hunting Journal Subscription - Subscriptions | Eastmans' Online Store Map http://www.eastmans.com/shop/maps/montana/unit-124-sheep.html Edited January 19, 2012 by Mathews XT Man
abrown
It'll be DIY. Looks like a good mag, but I don't think I need to subscribe to it to get quality information. I have Arc GIS on my computer, so maps won't be a problem or locating a specific area. I called Montana Wildlife Department, they informed me that they have alot of info on their web site. texastrophies
To hunt sheep in any state, you are going to have to either be awful lucky to draw a tag or plan on shelling out some serious coin. I remeber watching a show last year from a Montana hunt where the gentleman had been applying for over 20 years before he got drawn. Probably your best odds for drawing would be either New Mexico or Idaho. These states do not use bonus or preference points (at least I know NM doesn't, Idaho doesn't for deer & elk, not completely sure on sheep and goat) although you are still going against tremendous odds. But as I was once told, somebody will get drawn and it may as well be you. If you don't mind taking out a mortgage, you can look into Alaska, Canada or buy a Govenor's tag from one of the state's that sell them. Anyways, good luck and if you do happen to get a tag, please share the hunt with us.
abrown
From what I saw, in order to draw in NM you still have to buy a license. AZ, ID, and UT, the tags are around $2,000. MT there $755, and CO there $1800. I could do a round trip to MT for what a tag alone costs in any other state. CO and MT you only buy a $10 habitat stamp. I'm still working on a getting a bull, but figure I need to start putting in for tags now. Does anyone have any good advise? I know be in shape, not worried about that. Figure it'd be similar to an elk hunt.
pointing_dogs_rule
I agree with a lot of what Texas has to say: New Mexico & Idaho are the states you want to look at... if you want to hunt in the near future. Just draw straight out draws. Arizona license $151.25 must be bought. Points here. Alaska $5 per choice California license $151.20 must be bought Colorado you must apply for at least three years straight before you can get drawn. All $ are up front and will be returned.... minus a three dollar application fee. Idaho license $154.75 must be bought. No point system so everyone has an even chance. Montana cheap sheep tag....... most people wait 20 years for the once in-a-lifetime draw. Start building points now! Nevada license must be bought $142.00. Building points in Nevada is important. New Mexico license must be bought $65.00. Even draw for all with limited NR tags. $3,187 must be paid up front to draw. Oregon license must be bought $140.50. Points are important. Utah license must be bought $65.00. It only costs $10.00 to apply. Points here too. Wyoming NO license, however, $2,266 up front. Points here too. There are other options: Governor, commissioner & conservation tags. I hear most go for $30,000.00 ++++. Reservation Hunting.... tags go for $35,000.00 - $45,000.00. I think I've covered it all & got everything correct. good luck to all the dog Edited January 20, 2012 by pointing_dogs_rule
texastrophies
Thanks PDR, I didn't have the time to do that, but that was the point I was trying to get across.
abrown
Thanks! That gives me an idea on where I can put in. I don't see my wife going for a reservation or guided hunt! Unless I want a divorce. LOL I was just figuring on MT, and just playing luck. We'll see.
colorado bob
I've drawn 3 sheep tags here in Colorado. I killed a nice 7/8 curl back in 98. My wife killed a 3/4 curl back in 2000. I drew last year but had to turn the tag back in because of family problems. I'd say apply in as many states as you can. Plus check out state raffles----I know Colorado has one for a ram & a mountain goat. Cost $25 for a chance. You can check out the DOW for more info. In all honesty your best shot for a ram----is a Dall sheep in AK.
