Up here in maine we arent allowed to have our dogs run deer! That must be pretty interesting. We have 19 dogs right now we normally have about 30 in the fall. Ours run bear, bob cat, raccoon, coyote and rabbits! We also have a blacklab we are working on for partridge.. its so much run to hear the dogs sing their song running threw the woods!

I live in southeast North Carolina & running deer with dogs is a huge tradition. From my Granddaddy who just passed away in September down to me we've had deer dogs for a long time. In the club

i hunt with almost everyone uses Walkers. Occasionally though you'll see some beagles, black & tans, etc. Right now we only have two tri-colored Walkers but I hope to get one or two more before next deer season. It may be outlawed within a few years so we're enjoying it as much as possible!

Still quite a few dog hunters down here in MS. Season is broken up as to when they can and can't run them. I've been on several dog hunts over the years, there's nothing like a pack burning one up about to break out in a cutover. That being said, I wouldn't trade it for still hunting for nothing in the world. It's also it's a real PITA to have dogs run over on your lease and mess up everything, but I wouldn't jump on the bandwagon to outlaw them like many have down here, I realize it's a heritage. Only a generation ago deer were pretty scarce and dogs were about the only way you could get a shot or even lay eyes on one.

I still love to get in on a good rabbit hunt with some good beagles in Feb when our deer season closes. About as much fun as you can have really, love to hear a good dog work.

About the only time I'm in a hunting situation with fellow hunters using dogs is when they're retrieving waterfowl or doves. One of my best friends has Boykin Spaniels. Been ~38 years since I had my 1st and only season's experience with hunting deer with dogs. That's not for me. Used to hunt rabbits with beagles when I was in my 20's. I went with some guys once hunting wild pigs with dogs. Sounded like good fun till the hunt started. These russians down here take off running in more of a straight line compared to feral hogs that tend to run in circles...I was told that later anyway. Once was enough when more time was spent trying to find the dogs that went cross country. I still have a few friends that hunt pigs with hogs in the offseason.

Guys around here run rabbits and coons with dogs and also have waterfowl hunters using dogs. So long as they keep up with them I don't have a problem in the world with them.

We get dogs of some sort on us almost every year that chase deer. I know the whole deal that "good dogs" well trained won't chase deer, but I see dogs that are not supposed to chase deer doing it almost every year.

I know bear hunters that had hounds at times that would take off on a deer..they only did it once...
