Jodyslilbro
Hey all, I'm doing a presentation on hunting for school and was wondering if any one could tell me what items you purchase for hunting (clothing, licenses, etc.) go towards state government and federal government tax revenue? Thanks a bunch
wtnhunt
Pretty well everything you buy is taxed one way or another. State sales tax here is near 10%. Our property taxes the way I figure also go towards our hunting on our own land, pretty big chunk of change for us. Tennessee does allow landowners hunting their own land to hunt without purchasing a license under landowner exemption rules, but you still have to buy a license if you hunt anywhere off your own land. License fees, I only got my ml'er license last year and hunted my neighbors woods I think a total of 2 times, was $56 for it along with the general hunting fishing license. Rifle would have been another $28 and bow another $28. Buy gas or diesel to get to your land or to use an atv/utv, paying tax there too. Tominator
Little known fact about some hunting items like ammo, carry a federal excise tax. You might want to research that.
Ultradog
And don't forget that if you drive somewhere there are state and Federal Fuel taxes. There are Federal excise taxes, State sales taxes and often "environmental fees" on tires. Plus there are sales taxes on automobiles, licence plate fees and driver's license fees. Of course there are taxes on the land you hunt which go up dramatically if you put a hunting shack on it. There are application fees on order to buy a gun. Tax, tax, tax and the various governments still can't get enough.
Rhino
Like others have said, everything carries some sort of tax be it state, federal or both. Ever check out the state and federal taxes on a cell phone bill? They're there! They would also apply to those hunters using those expensive trail cams that email pics to you. If you hunt waterfowl most states have state duck stamps you must buy & every waterfowl hunter has to buy their federal duck stamp. Some states also have additional fees like, for example...a habitat fee you must buy when you buy your license. Research state license fees for that. Tominator's right about the federal tax on ammo. If you're a reloader you get hit with that too. Research both.
elkoholic
Basically, everything purchased brings in tax dollars to both state and federal coffers, with many of these taxes (or fees) being "hidden" to the direct consumer.
