Strut10
A year or two ago I bought a vintage, unfired CVA Mountain Rifle flintlock for my sister off GunBroker. Long story short.........the post office destroyed the stock and buttplate in shipping then refused the insurance claim. So I bought her a T/C Hawken flinter and paid her what she had in the busted gun and took it as mine. It's sat in the safe, broken, ever since. Seems, now, some guys at our club are going to start up some blackpowder fun shoots. What the heck. I talked to a friend who is a well respected custom muzzleloader builder. He said he'd be happy to fix it. Should have it back in a few weeks and for way less $$ than I think he should charge me. So, I guess I'm gonna have a muzzleloader. I unloaded a guy's flinter into a snowbank at the end of a hunt one day. That's my experience with them. I have little to no desire to hunt with one and I'm not sure if I'm going to like the amount of cleaning they require. But, what the heck...................... I'm gonna have one. Might as well try it.
dbHunterNY
it's a love hate thing... you love it when you're shooting it. it feels like your firing a canon with the smoke, or your back in the civil war. then we you have to clean it, you hate it. doesn't matter if you're hunting or not. they're just fun to shoot. be sure to post pictures when you get it back. wtnhunt
They are a lot of fun Don, and cleaning is really not all that bad. Timing of our ml'er season here is typically going to be the best time to be in the woods and best chance to kill a big deer before the craziness of the rifle season starts. I am hoping to add another ml'er before this coming fall to get another hunter from our house out in the woods.
Strut10
Guy that was fixing the stock called me last night to say it was done already. So I'm going up tomorrow to pick the gun up. Rode along to Grice's (BIG gun shop about an hour away) with Snapper this morning. I picked up most of the things it'll take me to get up & running with a flint gun. As an aside to my phone call with the buddy who's fixing the stock.....................when I dropped the gun off we got to talking about an old, local fellow who passed 15 or so years ago. This guy was a PHENOMENAL custom muzzleloader builder. I spent much time in his workshop as a kid watching him work. Anyhoo......... I told my buddy of always wishing I could have afforded one of those guns when I was a young guy. Well, when he called to tell me of my gun being fixed & ready, he said he had done some research & found one of the guns that was for sale !! He's gonna have it at his house tomorrow when I go up!! I may come home owning TWO muzzleloaders !!
