mo_hunter
What slug would work well from a non rifled shotgun and what kind of accuracy and range can I expect. Also do they make a 3.5 inch. Thanks
Guest DaHunter
Re: slugs with non rifled barrel Well us southern new yorkers can help you with that...its all we can use, lol. Well first off dont bother with the 3.5 inch shells. A 2.75 1 oz winchester works just fine and is quite accrute out too 100 it may drop an inch maybe 2 at the most. I would limit myself too 100 yards tops but have seen deer taken farther. What you gunna be slug hunting for?
mo_hunter
Re: slugs with non rifled barrel I'm going to be hunting russian boar. So I want something that will penatrate well and have alot of knock down power if possible. I'm planning on shooting around 50 yards. AJ
Re: slugs with non rifled barrel For shooting to 50 yards, most any of the foster type slugs will work just fine. Try a few and see which one shoots best in your gun. Brenneke Rottweil are popular slugs in smoothbore guns. I have used Remington Slugger loads with success on deer. As to which one has the most "knockdown power", the answer is none. Its a bogus statement. All 12 ga rifled slugs 2 3/4" and 3" will have more than enough energy to quickly kill just about anything inside of 50 yards. They will do a number on a hog too. Use your improved cylinder choke or a rifled choke tube and shoot a bunch of different ones to see whats best in your gun. I prefer 2 3/4" slugs. They are usually more accurate and kick less but have more than enough energy.
Guest DaHunter
Re: slugs with non rifled barrel O yea any old slug will kill it cleanly at 50 yards. Not sure about the slugs mentioned above but we do take deer with the winchesters i mentioned and at under 2 bucks for a box of 5 cant go wrong. Goodluck let us know how you do. too_pointer
Re: slugs with non rifled barrel If you want the best accuracy, check into getting a rifled choke for your barrel. I used one for years in a smooth bore, and it shot pretty darn good out to a 100 yards using Winchester Rifled slugs. 2 3/4 or 3 " will be fine for everything, mine was actually more accurate with the 2 3/4 ". too_pointer

carbonhunter
Re: slugs with non rifled barrel I always shot Brenneki's and Winchester's. But any of them will kill a deer, I think I've shot a deer with about all of the big four and then some.
lil hunter
Re: slugs with non rifled barrel Any rifled(foster) slugs will work fine in a smoothbore barrel. Do you have a slug barrel, or are you just using a regular vent-rid bbl?
too_pointer
Re: slugs with non rifled barrel [ QUOTE ] Any rifled(foster) slugs will work fine in a smoothbore barrel. [/ QUOTE ] This isn't always true lil. I found the Winchesters shot much better than the other brands I tried, also the Win. 2 3/4 was more accurate than the 3" shells for me. too_pointer
