archerjg
Shaun, Lynn, or anyone, I have a 2011 3500 HD with the Duramax and while it doesn't need an oil change yet it will only be another couple of weeks or so before it does. I've heard that I should be using synthetic oil in it. I know that it should be CJ-4 specification, but does it matter if the oil is synthetic or not? In all the farm equipment and Dad's 2005 Duramax we run Castrol Tection Extra 15w-40 regular oil. Since we buy it 30 cases at a time we have plenty of it and it meets the CJ-4 requirement would it be just as good as the synthetic oil? Other than price (way more expensive) is there really any reason to run the synthetic oil vs the regular oil? Thank you in advance. archerjg
Duramax Diesel engine. What's in it now is what it came with from the dealer. As far as I know it is regular oil in it not synthetic. Archerjg
Shaun_300
No need to run synthetic in it, you can if you want, yes it's better. I've never seen a duramax come apart due to oiling issues. Those things hold 10 liters of oil, and synthetic is probably $10/liter so it'd make for some expensive oil changes! If it were my truck I'd just run the regular 15w40 oil as long as it meets the CJ-4 specs.
archerjg
Thank you very much. I'll just stick with the Castrol 15w40 then. I appreciate the quick answer. Archerjg
