Changes to the next deer contest

A few of us have been kicking around the idea for a team "draft" next year. Rather than completely random picks from Chance (or whoever mods it next season) maybe we could submit some team captain names then draft teams. Teams could maybe stay the same year to year, worst teams get to draft members from winning teams for the next season?

If it sounds like a lame idea, blame Tom. It was his idea..... :fish:

Well, it adds a tiny bit of control to the situation (or at least more of a chance) to pick folks that you think will contribute. I know it's all in good fun, but I know everyone in here gets aggravated when you put forth effort to put up some points, yet you end up with 3 folks on the team that sign up and never even bother posting squat in their team threads.

you'd have to be a little more involved that's for sure. interesting idea. don't know if it'd create some "last kid picked for dodge ball" hostility. regardless what happens i'll still participate, even if Tom picks me. lol

one way to eliminate the effect from the ones who sign up and then sand bag the team is only use the top 7 or 8 scores from each. then maybe go to the next highest scores for a tie-breaker.

I was joking when I made the draft comment, you guys ran with it. Leave my good name out of this one... :D

Your good name? :clown::helpsmilie::poke:;)

It would be an interesting twist...if the draft process isn't a problem to figure out on an open forum. Might be a lenthy, time comsuming process to try to coordinate. Good point by dbHunterNY on hurting someone's feelings of being one of the last ones picked. I initially thought it was a good idea but it might create more problems.

I failed to post bone this year and would not blame anyone that had me picked way on down the list.

You almost did though John...last I heard...he'll be around next year. Based onn your performance in prior years with shooting that's not likely to happen again for another 12 years. Sorry for the reminder.

And who would get to pick first? I dont see having a draft as being a very non stress and non drama filled cluster, and we all know the last thing RT needs is more drama and stress.

One thing I would suggest would be to "draft' people after the first month of sign ups to replace any member that doesnt ever check back in with their team. No team should have a person that does not stay committed to the contest and their own team.

i like the idea of mixing things up a little...change is always good. I mean, its a no brainer that certain members on here will be the first to get picked - there are some that have some unbelievalbe places to hunt with little pressure and post bone just about every year, and on the other hand, there are some members who are just as hard core, or even more, who don't have access to such ground, or don't have as much time etc. Bottom line is, there's alot more enjoyment to the friendly competition when you know your team mates will chime in from time to time. i don't think this hypothetical has anything to do with picking for points, but everything to do with team participation and comradere (sp).

I know i didn't sign up last year, but thats only because i knew i had alot of other crap on my plate.

Its simple - if you cant handle not being the first picked, or being the last one standing then don't sign up for the draft.

I like the idea, but either way, i will sign up next fall.

Who gets to pick the captains that will draft the teams? In all honesty...in past years we have had some great contests....the turnout seemed way down this year....and I for one also didn't get a chance to really interact with my team this year. I like the idea of the team that won the previous year contest being kept together, or at least the members of the previous years winning team that sign up. I think the random picking works well. I have been on the winning team, and I have been on botton of the list teams...it is all good fun!

I was on a team and didn't interact with them. Due to my work schedule I hunted maybe 4 days all season with no brown down. I checked in, posted my seasons, and never had anything else to talk about due to my short and unsuccessful season.....does that make me a bad team member? Just curious? :D

Doesn't necessarily make you a bad member Kyle, just think it's a courtesy to check in once in a while. We end up with folks that say they killed a buck and never check back in, never post anything, just like this year. A draft I think would be fun and I think the scores would be a lot closer to each other instead of being as lopsided as they are now. Don't get me wrong, I know anyone can get skunked out any season, and none of us are going to smack a basket 8 on our managed property just for this light-hearted contest, but as a whole you can look at the teams and know the folks that never post anyway and that holds true in the contests as well.

just my 2 cents

I like that idea Ben. JMHO...if you want to participate, you should also check in with your team on a regular basis. I understand hitting the road to hunt limits checking in on a weekly basis (my problem at times) but checking back in when you return only takes a minute or so. Certainly a participant shouldn't have a problem checking in at least once every 2 weeks.

What else also makes you a bad member is not responding to messages sent to you.

I'll 2nd that!!!

Doesn't make you a bad forum member...just a bad teammate.

:p;)

Part of the reason for participating in the contest is to interact with teammates and learn more about each other/get to know them better. JMHO

I was on Rhino's team and didn't know that he had a lightsocket hairdo. I was taken back a little bit.:poke:

Like it eh? :D One of my best friends gave me that hat for my Africa trip.

He's almost 80, give the guy a break!! :clown:

It's tuff to get old! Especially when other buddies keep reminding you too! :p
