Shaun_300
Wow, thought it'd be a lot cheaper in the States like everything else is! I know dad pays around $400/month in a 3 bedroom house. Everything is electric, well, furnace, washer/dryer, stove, etc. Which evens itself out I guess when you compare a house with an oil bill for heat, gas stove etc. I know a guy at work has a huge bungalow with a wife that works from home, same thing, everything is electric and he's had it as high as $800/month in the winter. LETMGROW
Mine was $ 140 last month. Elec. dryer and sump pumps running so much this year are probably the biggest draw. 2200 sq. ft. including the full basement. I heat with propane, hot water heater and stove are also propane. That bill is another story. I keep it warm in here. As long as I have to bite the bullet anyway, I refuse to come home to or live in a cold house. I heat the garage on occasion ( oil ) and run a 5 hp. compressor some. No AC. Box fan and an open window are good enough. I never come inside until well after dark in the good weather anyway. If it was too nice inside I might not get wifey outside to mow the lawn and help me with the projects I find to do. LOL. I have AC in my John Deere though. Work it past midnight often on week nights. Wife is a good old girl. All she ever wanted was central heat and a pair of shoes. Lynn
LETMGROW
Have to share one story with you though. Or a couple. I ran my shop for quite a few years out of my garage at home. The last year I did the power company installed a " Time of use meter " daytime use was much higher rate than after 6:00 PM to 7:00 AM rates. I moved the shop to the city shortly afterward and never said a thing. This move had been in the plans for a while anyway. No one at home from 7:00 AM to just before 6:00 PM. My bills went way down dramaticly. No heat or compressor or vent fans etc. running all day. After about six months the power co. sent me a letter offering to change the meter back to a standard meter. This was supposed to be a three year trial. I sent the letter back saying No Thanks I happy enough. At the end of three years they rushed up and switched the meter. Damn. When I finished off the basement I bought several Intertherm electric baseboard liquid filled heat units. As an experiment I left the heat set on them at 68 deg. I remarked several times how nice it was to not hear the furnace run hardly at all as the heat from the basement came upstairs and heated the whole house pretty well. Sure was comfy. When I got the first bill for electricity I opened it out by the mailbox. $ 930! I ran to the house and shut all the heater breakers off. Never to be turned on again. The heaters went by the way of the Pennysaver and I put in a propane wall heater which runs only when we are in the basement. Lessons learned. stevebeilgard
Steve..what were you "sipping" in Alaska..lol.. we have a vender here that sells them..very impressive cost reductions this is my gillette house. i rented it 2 years ago so don't know what the bill is currently, but i do know what it was. i also built in alaska with the same stuff. it's great. remember, your home freezer and fridge has 1" of this styrofoam in it. how's your freezer working? 5 1/2 " works better. this summer i'll hook up my alaska house, and find out what my bills are. but, it will be expensive. i'll use wood heat up there, and i have a toyotomi oil mizer 22 heater also. my water heater up there is a rinnai r=98, instant on propane heater. that will save a bunch also. baically, you can pay more up front or pay out the rear end, your choice. lol. i know my investment recovery time from experience, and i repeated it in alaska. and i prefer sipping glenn levit. lol
