bfletch7441
Next year marks 10 years for JaLynn and I. She's always wanted to visit Maine, and I'd like to take her there for our anniversary next year. It will be around the 20th of September, our actual anniversary, and we'll be flying in and getting a rental car while we're there. So ... what's there to do in Maine? Where should we visit? What are the must see sights? Thanks for the help. Ben
dbHunterNY
In Kittery there's the Kittery trading post. Many places to eat seafood along the way and shop at antique stores. It's pretty nice around York, ME. Sept can be a little cool and is into the off season. Uncle has a camp (seasonal home) in Cape Neddick. There's long sands and short sands beaches. They have a small boardwalk with old style mini bowling. Also, there's a place that makes taffy right in there window. Watched them for a while as a little kid and still get drawn in as an adult. Also, there's Nubble lighthouse there out on the point. Not sure if Flo's Hot Dog stand will be open, but it's the best hot dog you'll have. We usually stay at the Meadowmere in Ogunquit. It's got an indoor pool, outdoor hot tub, and indoor Roman bath/spa. In Ogunquit you can take the scenic walk along the shore that takes you to Perkins Cove and then watch the lobster boats coming in before dusk or early in the AM. You can do that at any harbor actually. Further north just past Ogunquit on Rt 1 is Jake's Seafood. It's a little place snack bar style place that makes great seafood (lobster bisque and other soups if they're in season). A little further is Reny's Department store if you want to get stuff cheap. That's where I bought my Muck boots. In Scarborough, ME is a decent sized Cabelas. ...there's other stuff but those are some options if you're even in that area. bfletch7441
I guess you're the only one who's ever been to Maine. I'll print this off and take poke it in the folder. We're just beginning with our planning, so we may include one of these in our plans. Is Sept. 20 during the fall foliage change, or are we a little early/late? Thanks for the suggestions! dbHunterNY
normal years you're hitting it probably right once things are really starting to change. this past fall around that time things were starting to change but it was all a little later than normal. RangerClay
Go to the Kittery Trading Post. Do not go up to the top floor with a credit card or you will be sorry!!!! Be sure to hit a lobster pound or two if you get a chance. They are little roadside stands where you can get a couple lobsters, fries and sodas for a $20 bill. LL Bean is nice but very PC. Plenty of factory outlets around for the Mrs. Be sure to go fishing on a party boat. Last time we went, we went whale watching and it was awesome!!!!!!!! I'm not sure how many whales you see in Oklahoma but when one rolls about 30 yards from the ship, it freakin amazing! Definately something your daughter will never forget. Maine can be very chilly in September so bring some sweatshirts. The cool thing is that you will be past tourist season and get some great room rates. Sounds like Kittery is a must do. We'll put it on the list. Not many whales here in red dirt country, never even thought about doing something like that, but sounds awesome. The girls won't be going with us so a picture will have to do for them, this trip will just be JaLynn and I. We figured it to be a little cool, but that's just how I like it. Thanks again guys. JimT
KTP is nice for sure. We also have a Cabelas and LL Bean. There is a ton of stuff to do here. Lots to do along the coast. I personally prefer to head to the western mountains. We spend a lot of time in Rangeley/Oquossoc and Eustis/Stratton. Great places to fish and nature watch. If you wanna see a moose and catch a native brook trout or salmon, this would be the place to go. Where are you planning on staying?
jbeck
I love maine, hit Kittery, Cadelac Mountain, Thunder hole, BAR Harbor, LL Bean, and def. do the whale watch, I didn't like the Puffin watch but the wales are cool. bfletch7441
Where are you planning on staying? No idea yet, but probably in a few B&B's. Know of any place nice? Ben
Jeramie
Anytime I hit the East Coast I think about seafood! Keep your peepers open. Its a lot cheaper and far bettery quality than the seafood here. If you mention Red Lobster they roll their eyes...
