Slate or Glass

Glass works better on windy days because they tend to run louder than slate. I think it is easier to do soft yelps, clucks, and purrs on a slate. If you are like most turkey hunters you will end up with both. Glass calls have to be conditioned on the surface if they are not already and you may want to try a couple of different strikers becasue they will all give you a different tone. Don't have a white knuckled grip on the call, let the call gently rest on the ends of your fingertips and you will get better sound. Good luck; most importantly practice calling and don't be afraid to call.

slate has a much richer tone than glass and are a little easier to work. however, i've had a couple birds that responded to glass and nothing else. i've got a locally made call that's both. the lower frequency calls will carry their sound a longer distance. when you buy calls you don't need a variety but it helps with stubborn birds. after this first choice and when you buy more down the road, just don't buy the same type of call.

If you paln on buying "one or two", why not get one of each ?? Preferrably, get the same call (same pot), one with glass and one with slate and find the differences between the two surfaces.

I am an OVERWHELMING fan of a slate surface in a solid wood pot. Your tastes and style may vary. Only one true way to find out.

i have several 'custom' slates and a couple of glass.the slates are my favoite for working a bird and my glass will locate because it is raspy and loud due to sanding with coarse sandpaper.i also, have copper that works good close up.just a personal preference to a certain call. they all work especially, if and older bird needs more than one sound to swing the deal

If you're just getting into it and have used boxes before, I'd try slate first. My reasoning is that you can use a box to get loud and locate if you have to, and slates are traditionally easier to use than glass. Like others said, you would be well served to try both and see what combination of surfaces and strikers you like best. My favorite striker came with my least favorite (and cheapest)call I've ever bought. I love pot style calls, and always try new ones...it's fun, and it's the best way to find what works best for you.

If you're looking for a reasonably priced option, the Primos Jackpot series is pretty good. Best of luck!

God bless,

Ryan
