dbHunterNY
I went out looking for sheds behind my house this past weekend. I found a rub line just inside the woods not even 10 yards from the edge of my lawn. By the looks of the tree size and gouges above and below it had to be something decent. Here I didn't see a shooter all season long. I should've been hunting in my yard!
redkneck
Yeah that looks like he may have been sporting something decent. Funny how we'll get up and drive 50 miles to hunt when sometimes there's good hunting at home, but then again, my wife can't find me when I'm at the camp, got to go further than the back yard. dbHunterNY
good point! no issues regarding black bears and packs coyotes that are probably around. i tell my other half that there's spiders out there though, and you couldn't pay her to go back there alone. lol
Shaun_300
Wow that's a good rub! There had to be a dang good buck in your back yard not that long ago!
Ravin R10 man
heck..hang a stand for next year!!...that was no small buck..I had a buck come in and mutilate an apple tree I transplanted..he really did a number on it too..but then it's normal to have deer walk by the house just about any time of the day
layin on the smackdown
Take a look around and see if you can find any other rub lines/rubs from previous years in that area...If so, you can garauntee the bucks will be there again, and again, and again....problem is, what time are they cruising through? You may have just found yourself a gold mine...I'd put a camera there in late october next year and see what happens - along with telling the wife that the spiders are thicker than snot back there. dan
dbHunterNY
yea there's usually a few rubs along that side of the creek and another rub line on the other side. i've seen rubs there, but this one was made after early season. i tried not to disturb behind the house much. basically that end of the yard was turned from a grown up field into lawn. deer used to cross the road there. now they venture around the edge of my yard on that side of the creek and cross through a field with scattered pines. this year i'm thinking about mowing less of it and letting the weeds on that edge to about 30 yards wide (edit...this would be at the field with scattered pines. still want the deer working through my property around the house.). it also leads into a swamp there next to the road. that's pretty much a sanctuary that nobody goes into. there's a pine tree there that can be setup with the wind right and i can walk up the road and around so i don't cross through it to the tree. also where the rub is there's a couple pines that i can setup in that would be ok with the wind blowing down into the creek bottom. just not sure the how to get in there without crossing the trail. i'll put up some trail cams and only hunt the spots if the buck shows up and forms a pattern. my only fear is they're working through there at night.
