redkneck
About a year ago I started our first ball practice hitting balls to shortstop, letting the kids throw to first to see who had fundamentals. About 300 hits later (one arming it) my arm was so cramped it was unbearable. Next morning it was a shot of cortisone for tennis elbow, and instant relief. Today I still have pain radiating down my forearm. To top it off, about 3/4 way through deer season, I was ready to get down and shot a rabbit with a field tip/lumenock combo. Chased the bunny down as he did a U-Turn, I turned with him, only to have an audible sound "SNAP" in my ankle (but yes there was rabbit for breakfast) . Doc X-rayed me and said it was a severe sprain. 6 weeks later I am wondering if I am going to have to get an MRI cuz the pain wont let up when my right ankle flexes or retracts to hard stops. Any advice? I hear injections only provide temporary relief and prolong healing. :crutch: Almost 40, but getting old is starting to suck big time! mike
i can relate John, we are about the same age lol. I've had tennis elbow troubles for awhile now and had all the shots too. They aren't really good for you and like you said its short term fixes. I ended up having a release surgery on my elbow and its been good for quite a few years now. I wish I would have taken care of it early on so it didn't have to get to the point of surgery though. There are exercises you can do that will help. layin on the smackdown
If you want massive pain and a lot of never ending surgeries for the rest of your life, you can take the Bret Favre route, and just get the quick fix cortizone shot every 3 weeks.... Or you can pretend your not a super hero, suck it up, get the surgery, hate yourself for a month and ahalf, but love yourself, your abilities, and your life for many years to come.... Short term fixes = long term disabilities long term fixes = short term disabilities be the wise man Jonboy...good luck, and i'll shoot a prayer up for ya. dan
wtnhunt
Only cortisone shot I ever got was probably a bad example, but I will likely never get one ever again because they just mask problems and do not cure anything. Got one in my wrist/arm probably 9 years ago for problems related to complications from an arm that has been broken 3 times. Specialist I went to in Memphis I was hoping to get some answers, instead he insisted the shot would be a lasting cureall. The pain/tingling from the shot lasted a few days, when it finally wore off I was right back where I was at before.
redkneck
Thanks Dan! The shots can work wonders. Had one in my ankle earlier this year for plantar fasciitis (sp?) basically inflammation in the tendon that runs the length of the foot from heel to toe. Been having probs with it for a year or so when getting going in the morning, but then jumped a ditch at the camp and really got it inflamed. One shot and a week later it was a miracle. Have also had them in the shoulder, knee, and one in the elbow. They work well as a "let's try one and see" method, but not something that needs to be a recurring treatment IMHO. Rhino
Well...1st...welcome to my world of failing body parts! The older you get, the longer it takes to heal, especially ankle sprains. The last time I had a severe ankle sprain I was about your age...yep, about 18 years ago. Tendons heal slower than just about anything else because they get less blood flow...or so I've been told. It took ~18 months before my severe ankle sprain healed completely. As far as the elbow issue, if it hasn't improved by now you may want to get an MRI to determine the extent of the damage. Maybe you can get a package deal doing both on the same visit.
Adjam5
The shots can work wonders. Had one in my ankle earlier this year for plantar fasciitis (sp?) basically inflammation in the tendon that runs the length of the foot from heel to toe. Ahhh... the old heel spurs eh John? I had em...got the shots( 2 of em) in my heel, got good boot insoles(Spenco) and got fitted for orthodics. Since then no heel issues at all. Cortisone shots can work wonders. But be careful. Stretching is soo important for old guys who are falling apart
Hoosierbuck
All you old guys are cracking me up! Makes me even more glad that I bathe regularly in the fountain of youth up here in Indiana. At 41, I'm gearing up to play rugby this spring. Grrr!
