colorado bob
Snapper points are good for 10 years id memory serves me correctly. You can go to the website on check-----go to big game hunting, then preference points/draw results, type in your data & you should come up with your points. As far as someone use a bow? The elk will have been hunted for 2 months----they will be nervous best use a 30/06, 7Mag etc. If someone wants to hunt a cow. Application deadline is 4/3. Same deadline for deer. texastrophies
CB is right, 10 years on points. You should still have yours from 2006. Steve & CB are right on about bow hunting, you can do it, but the odds are going to be stacked against you. You can buy your OTC tag up until midnight the day before the season starts from a local outlet. If you go to the www.platoroco.com you can see the rates for the cabins. I would suggest reserving one adhead of time if that is the route you want to go. If not I will have room in my tent for two or three people. It looks like the area Charlie suggested for a camp willl be pretty good, from google earth anyways, and that area is about 6 miles or so from the cabins. When I hunted there, we stayed in the cabins. One day during the middle of the day, we looked up on the hill opposite us (way up) and saw a bull and a couple of cows. So what I am saying is the cabins are right in the middle of hunting ground.
huntinsonovagun
Are there restrictions on bulls? Sounds like a GREAT opportunity. I'll be doing some more thinking.
texastrophies
Are there restrictions on bulls? Sounds like a GREAT opportunity. I'll be doing some more thinking. Yes there is. Bull elk must have four points or more on one antler, or a brow tine of at least 5 inches long.
pointing_dogs_rule
Thanks for that great map. Very helpful. Just hope that I pass Steve B's physical This is really gettin' me excited. good luck to all the dog
redkneck
gregg, i'll take all the elk meat with me. no problem. lol about archery hunting: while you are most welcome to try, the elk are not in rut after the 1st week in october. a cow call may get their attention long enought to stop them, but they will not come in to a call. it will be spot and stalk and that is reeeeeaaal tough. go for it if you like, but i'll suggest a rifle for the best time. just me thinking out loud. Kinda the info I was looking for Steve, will probably bring the Wby 300 and leave the bow at home this time. Wasn't real sure when the rut was, thought it may be a little late for that. redkneck
I think firstwe NEED to decide is 2nd rifle or 3rd rifle. I know its a dumb question but why not first rifle? Or is that a draw only?
texastrophies
First rifle is draw only. Most people may draw without any points, as I imagine the majority of the people going won't have any points built up, but there may be some that don't, by going in the second season, it is Over The County tags and any one who wants to come can. Also there is the opportunity for deer hunting in the second season that isn't there in the first season. The second reason, for me personally, I have 4 pref points built up and don't want to use them on a unit that can be had for 0 or 1 points. That may sound kind of selfish, but I have been buying points for 4 years and have a overall plan that includes a lot of western states and points in them. Third rifle is also over the counter tags, and would be a possiblility, but when I was there a few years ago, the owners of the Skyline Lodge where we stayed told us they usually close at the end of October, so they can get out. They have pictures of snow up to the second floor of the lodge and the only way in or out is with snowmobiles. I really would prefer not to leave my truck there for the winter. Call me selfish again, if you want.
snapper
You selfish pig...just for that...I'm not going! All joking aside...Pete and I talked about this hunt. We both like the idea but both want to go on a whitetail hunt. So we are in the early stages on planning a whitetail hunt next fall and can't swing the costs of both hunts. Unfortunately we are going to pass this year!
texastrophies
Sorry to hear that but understand. Kind of feel sorry for Pete. You got yours and so it is no big deal for you, poor Pete is just left wanting an elk and won't get the chance.:saber:
redkneck
Gotcha Jeff... I'm learning! Hate you won't make it Gregg!
snapper
Hey Jeff...if you recall...he had no problems leaving you and me behind to get the first shot...not my fault he missed! Besides...as I recall...I wasnt the one who didn't climb the mountain either...lol Would have liked to make it though! Figuring on spending over $3000 for a fully guided whitetail hunt! Thinking a trip to Colorado would be a little over $1000 that could go to the hunt next fall.
redkneck
Be nice to start a list of stuff to bring (for us noobs). Of course we'll have a tent, binocs, spotting scopes, gps, lots of food and water. What about radios? Reccomendations on a sleeping bag? I know mine is not going to be sufficient. What's in your pack when your out walking all day? Also this will be over two weeks into the MS bow season, I should be able to smack us one or two and bring some fresh bacon burger and back straps for the grill. Can't wait. john
wtnhunt
Probably won't be able to, but got me real interested. Gonna have to do some checking on some things to see. Question on the deer hunting if a person were to get tags for deer and elk, see on the colorado fish and game site there is a combined(2nd rifle) season elk/deer runs Oct 20-28. Are the deer tags otc? Is the area a pretty decent area for deer?
texastrophies
William, Deer tags are not OTC, you have to draw them. The application deadline is April 3. To be honest, when we were there, I saw three deer. I think we may have been too high for the deer at that time. Really don't know. John, Good thought, I will work on something. wtnhunt
Thanks Jeff, I still hope to hunt mule deer again. Elk/mule deer combo would be great if it could work out. Got to talking about it with the wife yesterday afternoon and she said I should go. Christina overheard and said she wants to go. lol. But with looking at everything we have going on with the kids and with taking into account what the rising fuel prices are expected to do, unless something changes for us, I just don't think I could do it this time. texastrophies
In case you aren't aware William, and anyone else who might be looking at bringing a youth, NR Youth tags are $103.75.

redkneck
William we may could possibly work out a carpool. Still unsure on my end who's going with me, my hunting buddy is trying to make up his mind soon as to whether or not he's going to commit. Will know more in the next couple weeks. Fuel is going to be a big cost with dragging a trailer/atv out there and prices could easily be past the $4 mark. Over 2,400 mile round trip from here. wtnhunt
Thanks for the consideration John. Last thing I want to do is to say I am going and end up not being able to. Guess I am still a maybe for now. We have been looking for a car to help ease up on how much gas we are burning. If I were to go on this trip I could put a little less down on the car and use that for the trip. Spending over $100 a week on gas now and this is the time of year we don't really have a lot of extra driving. At the current price of gas, once the extracurricular stuff at school with the kids picks back up over the fall we are probably looking around $175-$200 a week. Figured at current prices we were looking at around $450 round trip to Colorado for gas from here, but that was not figured pulling anything and that was not with figuring for gas used while there. Who knows what gas prices will be like this fall. Question for Jeff or Steve or anyone else on spotting scopes for a hunt like this. Almost bought a nikon prostaff spotting scope before we went to Wyoming, but passed up the deal. I have been in the market for one for a while, and cannot decide on whether to go with a compact or full size. Thinking for a trip like this, if I were to go, a compact scope might be better but thought I would ask you guys what your thoughts were. pointing_dogs_rule
More questions: With my "older cousin" from Baltimore coming I will give him the first shot at a bull. I am not sure of the elk density in this area and I would be more then happy with a cow. I could apply for a cow tag. You guys think that this is wise.... are the cows more plentiful?? Good luck to all the dog
texastrophies
William, I am going to defer to Steve on this question. I know he uses his a lot. I prefer to use binos to locate and then use the spotting scope if more zoom is needed. I will leave it at that.
stevebeilgard
in general, cows outnumber bulls 10 to one. so, if this is a meat hunt for you, get a cow. but, if this is your big opportunity to shoot a bull, go for the bull tag. also, (and i have no idea in colorado) if you have a bull license, can you legally shoot a cow? some states yes, some no. it's no in wyoming, but maybe worth checking out. hey arty: you know me. bring a spotting scope. that nikon is excellent. in fact, every one bring a good set of binocs and a spotting scope, a tripod, and learn how to use it. most of my days are in either binocs or scopes. texastrophies
PDR, If you think you will be hunting together, if one has a bull tag and the other has a cow tag, it could possibly work out pretty good. I don't think you can kill a cow on a bull tag. Not for sure what the odds are for drawing a cow tag, but if that is the way you want to go, apply for the cow, maybe even as a second choice with a PP for first choice and then if you don't get it, you still have the fall back as an OTC bull tag. I will try and see if I can find the odds for cow tags tomorrow.

I will try and see if I can find the odds for cow tags tomorrow. Bull tags are for bulls and cow tags are for cows. There are either sex DRAW tags. They are listed in the book as EE as opposed to EF for cow(draw) or EM for bull(draw or OTC). You can go to DOW site and order the big game guide free. Or look it up online. Or hotmail me and I'll give your questions the best shot. Also when the BLM website comes back up Ill try to order a doz maps of the area in case someone wants paper maps. I like them as theres no radio, internet, cell service in Platoro and darn little electricity. FM and AM radio signals do not go to Platoro and theres less than 6 hard line phones ( the Bell as we used to call it). There is two lil stores and a great restaurant and lots of free and pay campin sites. We plan on camping free on BLM land. If I cant order maps Ill try to get them downtown here and at worst Ill drive to Alamosa or Saguache and pick some up. They are not free( tho I've met a BLM office employee who thought they were). As far as weather you may hunt mornings in your long underwear and afternoons in a camo t shirt. Or you may be shoveling snow. Or hanging on for dear life and trying to keep your camp outfit from blowing away. Good luck to all.
