You guys have answered my prayers. I have been looking at the Big Game Brochure trying to figure out where to go. I would of been hunting alone in a cold camp. Let me know what extra I need to bring and silvertip I will give you some cash for a map for myself. I am in Afghanistan right now and plan on buying a 300 when I get back for this trip. I got new Binos, Scope and Range Finder from Santa so I can not wait!!! I have a few questions. If I try and get the Cow tag I can still get the OTC Bull? Did you see many Deer if I try and get a rifle tag? In CO can you get an Archery tag and a Rifle Tag? Silvertip if you Archery hunt and want someone to go with when I get back to Carson I would love to talk hunting I am always willing to learn and rarely have someone to go with me. Also being from MO I don't know much about Elk and when I do get to hunt I hit it hard. I also rather take my Bow out. I rambled enough. Again thanks for the Opportunity and let me know what I need to bring extra, oh I am in good shape but I will hunt with anyone. Aaron

First, I see you are in Afghanistan, so I assume you are in the service, Thank You.

Second, welcome to the forums.

Third, the way I am reading the regs, if you draw a cow tag, you can not buy an OTC bull tag in this unit. Same goes with archery tags. Basically in this unit you are only allowed one elk.

Stay tuned to this thread and we will update it periodically.

What if I get an Archery tag for a different unit? I know for Meeker two years ago, but I think it is a Class B unit not an A. I will have to do some more review tomorrow thanks for the info.

hey, do you have a tent, or will you be needing a spot on one of our tents? i have room for 2, maybe jeff has a few more open spots. you'll need your own bag. or are you planning on staying in a lodge a few miles away? up to you, of course. also, if you don't want to bring a gun my 270 is ready to go. you can use it.

HERE'S A QUICK LIST OF WHAT TO BRING ON THIS HUNT:

1) good binocs and a spotting scope.

2) backpack for carrying extras around, such as lunches and water

3) warm sleeping bag. normal is 20 degree nights, but prepare for below zero

4) good cloths. highs will be 45 and lows in the 20's. but, this is colorado so it may be below

zero or 75 degrees. for a more accurate weather prognosis, contact god.

5) good boots. you'll be at 10,000' climbing to 12,000. you'll want warm, dry boots.

6) food and tent. we'll have some extra tent space free, 1st come 1st served. bring your own food or eat what i bring and pay for what you eat. my tent has a stove with oven, so you could bring premade food, such as a casserole or stew, and heat it up. i bake biscuits every morning and evening. i'll need to know ahead of time who wants to eat my food as i don't want to buy a bunch extra.

7) 4 wheeler. i prefer to walk, and will. i personally think the elk know the sounds of the motors and what that means. but, who knows. i just know i'll be hunting areas where the 4 wheelers can't go, and that's where the elk will be and the crowds won't. i'm a hiker. but, if you want to bring a 4 wheeler, you can't go wrong.

8) 5 boxes of shells. (i've seen some of you shoot) lol

OK, so I called Colorado (thanks for your help.. Texas) and if I apply for the "cow tag" the 4 points that I have built up in Colorado for elk will disappear. Looks like I will go for the Bull tag OTC and keep building my points.

I talked to my cousin in Baltimore and he is also coming along. I will be driving from Iowa and he will probably fly into Denver. Not sure on where I will be staying. If anyone from this way wants to truck-pool then drop me a note.

Thanks once more for all who are working to put this together.

good luck to all

You bring up a good point. To all those who are building points in Colorado for elk and plan on going on this hunt, you still need to apply by the April 3 deadline to get your point for this year. There is an option to just apply for the PP. You will still have to front the full fee, but you will get a refund after the draw.

I was hoping to crash with one of you guys if there is room. Let me know either way. I appreciate it. I will have an option of my 270 or 300 once I buy it. Thank you for the option though.

Also if anyone wants to fly into the Colorado Springs airport and then needs a ride let me know I live like 5 minutes from the airport.

Steve if you still have the room I would like a spot and do you make homemade or store bought if you make store bought I will bring some with me as well, just let me know what you suggest and I will get it. I am good on the bag, clothes etc. I am going to buy another pair of boots and if you ever want company on the hikes I am game to learn and go. Thanks.

Whomever wants to put me up I will take it. I should have my set of cots by then, they are coming back from Afghanistan so who knows with containers etc. It is a bunk bed cot that can be used as two different so if another cot is needed I will give it up. I might be able to get my hands on some MREs as well if anyone wants me to bring those.

the mre's might make a good lunch if they don't weigh too much. normally it's just a sandwich or 2. BUT, how do you get mre's? i hope it's not by taking anything. we need to be sure to keep a clean slate here. but, if surplus is available cheap maybe some won 't hurt. i've never actually eaten one. when i was in service in the late 60's, we ate left over k rations from ww2. mmmmmm. not

Don't forget to trim your toenails...lol

whoa, greg. great point! i actually had an article published on this very thing. (about 300 years ago).

yes, cut your toenails 1 week before any hunt. if your nails are long, one day of walking will bring pain. then, if you go back to camp and cut them just a bit too short, you may be in pain for a few days and unable to walk. so, cut your toe nails a week before any hunt. if you do cut them too short, you'll be all healed up by time to hunt.

a simple tip that can actually save your hunt. do it.

I have a case of mre's and a case of farmer's coffee i'll donate. Thay came to me free and Ill make them free to camp. Also i did airport pickup duty on the first elk camp but did not need to on the second. im no longer in denver working but am only 35m from springs so close enough to work out a ride. Of course if Kathleen is coming I'm available for Denver duty. My wife is talking about another camper buy, so we have one for fall. Not sure about that yet. Let me know what else the group needs. The BLM site was down when I tried to order the maps so Ill just call LaJara or go down there some weekend, it shouldnt be a prob unless Obammy doesnt let fed workers keep more than 6 maps in the office for sale. One never knows...

A couple of items that aren't absolutely necessary, but are pretty nice to have is a range finder and a GPS. Distances out west can be hard to judge, especially for a flatlander, a good range finder with the greatest range you can get is very beneficial.

GPS's can go from pretty simple and cheap to extreme. At a minimum, you need one that you are able to "mark" locations, i.e. camp, where you parked at, down game, etc. and then have a function to get you back to that location. Most of them will also show you tracks of where you went, and record your distance that you traveled which is interesting to review. I don't think it will be an issue where we are going to be, but you can also get cards that have land ownership to install on the GPS. This will allow you to tell where you are in regards to private land and public land at all times. Most of your newer Garmins are able to do this. Some of the other brands also.

I got the older GPS, I don't rely on it but I will set the Base camp and if I like an area on it but I prefer maps. I got a range finder for X-mas as well it only goes to 550 on shiny objects. I wanted the 1000 but $100 more. Any suggestions on boots? I know it is a lot of walking so I was looking at some with no insulation with Gortex and are like tennis shoes anyone have recommendations?
