texastrophies
good luck Bob, will be looking for some stories and pictures from you when we get back. Thanks for giving us the directions Charlie. Looking on google there appears to be two or three different locations a few miles apart that could serve as a campsite. I will look for the white chevy and assume that is our new temporary home. Can't wait. Just shut walmart down because their shelves are empty after I got through buying supplies, or so it seemed to me. I will probably have enough food for everybody. I have a package of heavy paper plates and a small box of plastic utensils, but if someone would have a few more to bring it would probably be beneficial. My menu at this time consists of 3 racks of baby back ribs, chili, hamburger, somersausage crackers and cheese, soup, chips and cookies. Will have a small propane BBQ pit, two burner propane cook stove, my big fire ring/BBQ grill. Charlie, that was good info on the showers, I know where the Platoro Cafe (I am assuming that is the one across the bridge that has the store, cafe and cabins) is at, but where is the store you mentioned? silvertip_co
The store is 1st left going north in to Platoro, the Cafe is 2nd left. You can go from one to the other by winding thru town if you dont want to go back out onto fr250. If you want a sitdown meal both place have restaurants with great meals. Ill try to remember to call about diesel fuel today and call Sam the packer too in case we need horses. The location between valdez creek and trail creek is excellent free campsite, its 1/4 mi long amd 200y wide and plenty room to set up for small or larger group. It gets used a lot but I've never seen it crowded in summer or in elk season. Fri snow is predicted but temps generally are 55days and 35nights. Go to NOAA - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and type in Platoro Co for weather and 7 day forecast which changes daily of course but is pretty accurate IMHO. Radio reception at camp is very limited. Cell will work some on the porch of the platoro store. silvertip_co
No one in Platoro valley sells diesel fuel the Cafe guy said.
cowboy778
NO worries Charlie about this weekend I am still taking a load down there and will tarp it and put a sign on it for Steve that says Team Realtree Camp Wood. I should have plenty of wood for at least two camps. I rather cook over open fire but propane is quicker. I will have at least two truck loads. I will bring my maul, chainsaw and ax if anyone thinks we will need it. I have a couple stumps I have not gotten through yet. I think the closest diesel is Antonito. I will fill up before getting there. Charlie is right about dragging if you take the right tracks you wont have any problems if you have a long trailer. The weather for opening day is 51 high and 27 low as of right now. Food I am brining homemade biscuits, chilli, and beef stew. I plan on bringing summer sausage and power bars to take out in the field.
stevebeilgard
hey bob, good luck on your hunt. you always seem to do pretty good. i'll have 15 gallons of extra diesel, should anyone get too low. i'll fill up in antonito and that should be enough to get me through the hunt and back to antonito, but we'll see. friday night, before the opener, i'll have salmon and asperegas for dinner for everyone. we'll decide how to cook it that day. most likely bbq, but who knows. after that, i'm expecting to be eating elk.... lol. actually, i do think we'll have at least one elk down opening day. but i'm an optomist. i leave tomarrow for a few days in cheyenne. wednesday morning is blood drawa and a early mri, then on to antonito or maybe further. are there any motels between antonito and the turnoff for platoro or any in antonito? i can't remember. or i may stay in alamosa. then, thursday at dawn i'll be headed to set up camp. no phone service or internet after wednesday. pointing_dogs_rule
Hey Steve... remember you're hunting with me.... I bet a can miss an elk very easily...LOL I actually downed an antelope at 240 yards last week with my 25-06 in Wyoming. Sure wish I could use that gun because I am not as comfy with the 30-06. Me and my cousin will bring at least one "FULL MEAL" since everyone else seems to be contributing a full meal. Hope the check-up in Cheyenne goes well and loking forward to seeing you guys. Thanks to the guy who suggested my hunter ID.... it should be here by tomorrow Clothes were sent yesterday via UPS to my cousins in Colorado, so I will only have a carry-on and rifle for the plane trip to Denver. (I just hate those baggage charges). We will be in camp on Friday... hopefully before noon. Will someone PLEASE send me the GPS coorindates of the camp. Do this by my realtree message account. Good luck to all the dog

texastrophies
Steve I am pretty sure there is nothing between Antonito and the turn off, and not real sure about Antonito, although I would think they should have some type of motel. I checked with the Skyline Lodge in Platoro and they said they "should" be selling hunting licenses, but they didn't leave me that warm fuzzy feeling. Thinking I might adjust my route and go through Antonito and get my license there instead of going through Chama and getting it at Platoro. silvertip_co
The camp store at Halfway as I call it has licenses also. Steve the super8 in alamosa is nice and has continental breakfast and its nea walmart for those last min items. There are cabins on 17 south of antonito just as you cross the cpnejos river bridge that are not expensive.there are some on the right and some on tne left down a half mile or so. Not fancy but nice people. Cowboy778 when you drop the wood can you try to do it behind(south) of where we all camped as steve b thinks the little clearing surrounded by aspens is a more protected spot than where we camped. If not we'll just camp where the wood is. LOL.ill try to bring some tubs full of cut up wood when I come. Good luck to all.

silvertip_co
Looked at tne 7 day forecast. 55days 33 nights. Not too bad. I hope it holds. Its really cold there when it drops to 9 below. We should have a great time. I still don't know if we'll be there fri or sat or sun. Working on the rig and loading up some today. Ill bring the extra BLM maps with me. Edited October 13, 2012 by silvertip_co

silvertip_co
Dawn has reassigned her Saturday meeting to a friend of hers so at the moment it looks like we could leave at 4pm friday and get there around 8pm. Still be settin up in the dark but at least she'd get up on the mtn early Saturday. This year we MUST all pose for a group foto. We didn't do that when we all met in cement creek and I remain sad about it. I hope Aaron is having a good trip dropping off the wood, he was gonna camp in his truck overnight last night. I have another load about the same size. I have a couple stumps I have not cut up yet either. I might throw those on top. I also posted some pictures of a creek I crossed and some bear tracks I found. There was any where from 2" to 1' of snow up high. I saw 11 elk and 1 good bull. texastrophies
That is sounding and looking good. Was the bear tracks near where camp is located? Where were the elk???????
cowboy778
Saw 4 Cows South of Tobacco lake, Bear Tracks were in the Conejos Peak Bowl down by the creek. The other 7 where down on the road on the way out right at dusk by the first little town you come to. Right past a couple of hunters that just came out the woods. Saw a lot of sign up by tobacco lake. I want to talk to Steve first but I think Canon Bonito would be good area. Cant wait to get this started I started loading the second load of wood today. I have a PT test tomorrow I did not want to over do it.
texastrophies
Did you see many hunters? Anyone camping near where we will be?
cowboy778
The clearing before us there was a horse trailer and two campers. The trail head before our camp there was three horse trailers and 4 trucks. Over by tobacco lake there was 2 horse trailers and 2 trucks. There wasn't a ton but about what I thought there would be. Where we will be camping there was no one.

Trevor300wsm
Hey guys, For the past couple months I've been looking for a cargo trailer to convert into a hunting/camping trailer. I finally found one (3 days before I leave). I "should" be picking it up tomorrow. I'm going to be bringing it to sleep in and haul my ranger. Its already insulated with A/C and heat. There is nothing on the inside, I'll just be sleepin on a cot & a futon for now. I'll have a generator (quite one) to power it when needed. My plan is to fully rig it out over the next few months with complete living quarters, fully plumbed. Its 28ft long and just has the normal ground clearance. Do you guys that have been here before think I'll have any issues getting back in to where we are camping? It was mentioned earlier about the ruts, but I'm not sure how big of a trailer y'all guys normally bring in. cowboy778
I have a 29ft travel trailer and made it back ok. Just have to watch the ruts. After the first turn to the left stay to the right where the ruts get bad and you should have no problems.
silvertip_co
That's a cool hunting rig trevor. I agree with cowboy778, watch the ruts as you come in and youll be fine. Its just two short stretches of ruts as you come in. My boss gave me fri off too so ill finish loading and hopefully leave here by 4pm when wife gets off. Got a new furnace installed in camper last eve and straightened out a dead short. I just have to put new tsat on and button it back up this eve and I can start loading atvs on wed thurs. We are both excited about camping and hunting with all the guys. Family. Friends. Outdoors. That's what its all about.
stevebeilgard
That is sounding and looking good. Was the bear tracks near where camp is located? Where were the elk??????? don't be scared, jeff. i'll protect you. lol
stevebeilgard
i start blood draws tomarrow at 8am, then see a doctor, then a cat scan. i should be on the road to antonito by 10. in any case, i'll overnight in antonito at the narrow guage inn, then head for camp on thursday. my cell is 307-696-9482 but will most likely not work after 9am thursday. i've decided i don't need to leave at daybreak on thursday. i thought i'd leave at 7 or 8, get to camp by 9 or 10, and enjoy a bit of the heat of the day to work. sounds like it will be in the mid '50's, so that will be nice. i think with 4 hours i'll be done. we'll see.
