well, guys. i've spoken with an old colorado outfitter friend of mine who is retired. he tells me our area has the best elk herd per sq. mile in the state, and we should do well. i've also spent humdreds of hours looking at acmemapper and google earth, as well as the topo maps charlie was good enough to send me. i'll tell you, i know elk and i really like this area.

finally, i have 6 weeks of radiation starting after memorial day. that will give me some 3 day weekends in denver to head south and scout the area. i'll be able to make some good hunting area suggestions. but, i'll save my opening day thoughts until we wake up to the weather, wind, temperature, etc.

fact is, i'm excited and expect a good kill ratio. charlie, bring the meat pack boards, charlei!

Steve when you are in Colo you BETTER come and visit and stay as long as you like. We have a spare room thats all yours to rest up in. We can scout weekends down there, or I can with you if Dawn is tied up with summer school. Also she has some elk things to tell you about the place. Good luck with the radiation. Keep us posted.

I'm excited about our realtree hunt too, as is my wife. This will be our third. On the first hunt two guys with Steve B killed a nice big 5x5. On the second hunt we got nothing but a good time. This time we hope to score as the last time we hunted there we found the elk but didnt close the gap. Our biggest concern is the camping part. We sold our 24' camper trailer and are not sure what we wanna do. Im chronic asthmatic so am not much of a tenter. But I did ok for 3 yrs when we had one of them tent trailer campers that we pulled. So we'll see.

I think my friend Kyle and his friend Will, both soldiers from Ft Carson may hunt elk with us but wont be sure til later. They have not been on Realtree that Im aware of. Kyle is sort of like a stepson to me and I just met Will(Kyles Army boss) a few weeks ago and I took them turkey hunting. I have four Ft Carson hunting/shooting friends, Staff Sgts mostly I think, since spring '11 and have hunted with some and shot with all. So from my persepctive we may have two more Sergeants with us, or they may hunt u34 with a young hunting friend up there. Too early to tell but I guarantee you they will be a welcome addition to camp if they come.

Hey guys! I would like an update on the sleeping arrangements if possible. How many tents? How many people per tent?

Right now it's only me, however, one cousin may come along and hunt with me (depends on his other draws). I would like to stay in a tent, however, I understand that there is a cabin 4 miles away.

What are the number of people commited so far?

I am pretty sure my father is coming also. Won't be hunting, but will stay in camp and keep the fire going and the coffee hot.

Also I would have to check to get the name, but I got a pm a week or two ago from another member (new) who said he was planning on coming. I believe he had spoke or pm'ed with Steve also.

I have 4 cots and pretty sure we can sleep four in my tent fairly comfortably. Also, as PDR mentioned there are cabins that are pretty comfortable just down the road. I would suggest making some reservations early if you are thinking about that.

Cool, the more the merrier. It will be Dawn and I for sure, and maybe our shooting friends Kyle & Will, and of course cowboy778 from the forums here ( whom I just met Saturday and shot with, he's a great guy). We just have to work out some place sleep. I may rent a camper for Dawn and I and not sure my lungs will take tenting.

I guess that's what I am getting at. If the tents are all filled up maybe it's time to start looking at the cabin reservations??

We hope to get to u81 over the 16th-17th to do a lil scouting. If I get into the Conejos valley I'll stop at the cabins that are 6 mi east of the intended campsite and see if they have rooms and how much. Theres also two ranches that rent cabins but I heard the one west of our campsite is 'nasty' but I cant recall who told me that. It'll all work out I'm sure, it's pretty much all I think about.

Yes we ate there a few times and paid to shower also though we were camped at the trail creek site where we will camp this year. Dawn and I hope to get to Platoro weekend of 16/17 or 23/24 and go by there. Very nice people we talked to them and got hunt info from them them and prob just need to make a reservation. The lodge CAN get 17feet of snow by spring so they tend to close Nov 1 but the last we were there was scuba welders working on dam gates from a workraft so they had planned on being open. Since the owners are from TX they tend to play opening and closing by ear and by the weather. My original intent in suggesting a realtree(little r) hunt was to rent a a large cabin and split all the costs even tho at the time we had our camper. Its a nice place and it would be good to share a large cabin so we could shower and have meals but then you have to come and go to trail creek every morn and eve and we would miss Steve's company and any 'new' elk calls he comes up with. Im open to any and all suggestions...

I'd like to "tent camp", HOWEVER, My thought was along your lines...... it would be good to split a cabin costs for a nice warm shower, cleaning up, electricity for charging batteries, keeping food fresh or just in case anyone feels ill. I would put in for a cabin $$ an plan to stay in a tent. Just my thoughts.

good luck to all

Well we could each kick in 350.00 and get the huge cabin that sleeps 12. But we would need 8 of us to do it. That would give us 8 nights. Or something like that. Only prob is the cabins are 9mi from our sort of honey area. The other cabins on way in are only 6 mi but I gotta find their website to see what their offerings are.

Wish you could tent camp with us because that is the experience of it I like to get as close to nature as possible but understand the health concerns I guess you will have to hang out as long as you can around the camp fire. Can not wait to go shooting again with you as well. Had a blast. I am trying to get in an archery shoot next week and maybe a garage sell too so it will be busy.

i just got back from a weekend in camp. i wanted to scout some and gather ideas. guys, this is a nice area. saturday morning i left early to walk into tobacco lake. i saw 7 different herds of elk, smallest 5 biggest 13. also saw some bighorn sheep. lots of black timber, so i'm sure i only saw a small percentage of the elk. only 3 deer.

i see plenty of chance for elk this fall. especially if someone wants a cow elk. they were in camp this morning. ( i left at 5:30). anyone willing to work should get an elk. i only walked about 4-5 miles, and can tell you my chemo/radiation is taking a toll. i'll be over it by october, though. still, i was at 10-12,000 feet and life is different there. while i will look at the daily weather situation, i do plan to hunt high if the snow is 2' or less. when i say hunt, i'll be out with dog and somone and won't have a license. i can also work with another team where we can hunt a mile or 2 apart, yet together. in sight and walkie talkie range.

there's also an outfitter close by, who can haul out an elk for a price. i didn't check the pricing, but maybe charlie can when he's there next week. my next 4 weeks are going downhill, i think, so i got my idea base done and will go back there 3 days before the season. my camp has cot space but no cots. all mine are in alaska. i think i can sleep 3-4, counting me.
