so for the first time in my life, i decided to get my bow chronographed for poops and giggles and was suprisingly shocked at the end results. Im not a speed freak, but as far as i knew from shooting this bow, this sucker is fast, especially with my set up, but holy crap, ends up, its not that fast at all...

My bow is rated IBO at 316 or 315 fps, and i think its with a 30 inch draw at 70 lbs and a 320 or 350 grain arrow with nothing on the bow. I just had new cables and string put on a week ago, so i figured, lets see what im shooting...

here are my stats :

Mathews Switchback XT

Draw Lenght: 27 inches

Draw weight: 68 lbs

Gold Tip Ted Nugent series 5575 arrow

100 grain field tip

Blazer vanes (3)

Gold Tip knock

Chronographed speed - average of 3 shots - 265 fps

i thought for sure i was in the 285-290 range, but holy crap, im not even close! I can't even imagine what an arrow looks like at 345 fps!!!

any of you had your bow chronographed?

that's dang close to what i'd expect (268 fps)

your bow IBO is 315 fps. your arrows are probably close to 373 grains; 27" @ 8.6 gr/in, 18 gr for vanes, 11.5 gr for nock, 111.5 for insert and point. loss of 10 fps for being heavier than IBO arrow weight of 5 gr/lb of draw weight. you lose a little speed with a D-loop and peep on your string (20 gr with -6 fps). lose about 10 fps per 1" of draw length under 30". about -2 fps per lb draw weight under 70 lbs.

i've never shot mine through chronos. i'd guess my Evo setup how it is now to be around 310 fps. i did shoot the first hunting bow i owned through one. it shot 213 fps! slow by today's standards.

Yep all that adds up fast. Your biggest loss is your DL Dan. Unreal how they rate these things. My new Bear Assualt was a 330 IBO rated bow, but I'm getting around 286 or so I think. I got tired of my meta peep and put on a peep with the rubber cord tied off and cost me 10 fps alone. Some of the folks I know kill me with their speeds they tell me, when I know what arrows they shoot, know thier specs, and they still are swearing they're getting 10-20 over IBO.

Sometimes (actually a lot of times) you'll find chronys that are not calibrated very well. A guy with a shop that has one that consistently reads high actually gets an added benifit in that folks tend to think they can tune better.

My standard hunting rig is a 2000 Hoyt MagnaTec set to 67 pounds with 29" draw. Arrow weighing 380 grs the old girl nails down 270 fps.

My Pearson TX4, just for playing, is maxed at 62 pounds with a 28" draw. Arrow weighing 314 grs it nails 310 fps.

My 2011 Martin Shadowcat is set to 55 pounds with a 28 1/4" draw. Arrow weighing 282 grs it nails 285 fps.

My Ole War Horse, a 2000 Hoyt UltraTec is set to 62 pounds with a 29" draw (off the string). With a 314 gr arrow is nails 295 fps.

Yep, I live by my chrono when setting up my bows. My tourney's bows are set at 280 fps and my hunting bows are at 287 fps. This allows me to keep all four of my set ups with the same pin gap which equals not having to make adjustments from bow to bow when shooting them during hunting or tournaments.

Alot of shooters have had their bubbles busted when shooting their arrows through a chrono, it'll make grown men cry sometimes when they see reality.

Good topic to insert the speed vs. penetration question. Google Kinetic Energy and Momentum for some great hunting archery gear reading.

I was always a fan of a hard hitting arrow instead of blazing speed. My old setup chronoed at 260 fps so don't feel bad. However that was with a 30" 2317 XX78 alum. arrow weighing 575 grains. I just retired my old Hoyt and bought a new Rampage XT and have yet to chrono it. It seems faster with the same arrows. Hoping to get close to 265-270fps.
