ilhnter
We recently bought a piece of property and have a small amount of field that we need to mow as well as a piece that we would like to put a food plot in. Has anyone used any of the atv tow behind mowers or plows? How did they work? Which ones do you recommend and which ones should we stay away from?? Any input on atv implements would be much appreciated!
dbHunterNY
the fourwheer i used was a Honda Foreman 450 with gears and automatic clutch. i used a swisher tow behind atv mower. it worked quite well. basically it was a grown up field with weeds of all kinds between waist and chest high. it mowed them up as long as you went slow in first gear. if you tried to go faster the belt would slip. illinois isn't too rocky but i would suggest using harrow drags and multiple passes, going deeper as you go by adjusting them or adding more weight on top. pulling plows around here anyway is pretty hard on the atv. also the stop and go slow speeds when i mowed after about four days was rough on the clutch. now i've got a small 20HP utility tractor (not a lawn mower or garden tractor) and that works much better with a 4' tiller on the back. LETMGROW
I'll throw some sites on here to check out. I don't use these myself as I have two tractors and 3 pt. equipment. Kunz Engineering Inc., AcrEase Pull Mowers & Till-Ease ATV / UTV Tillage Equipment, Finish and Rough Cut Trailmowers www.plotmaster.com Antler King ® Online www.drpower.com There are several more. I'll do some homework and add some later. Most mfg. say they recommend 350 cc. or larger but from what I have seen I would step it up to at least 500 cc. Atv's. ilhnter
Lynn, thanks for all the links, I appreciate the help. Have you any experience with any of the brands or which would you recommend?? As you know this stuff is not cheap and I'm just looking for some recommendations so I don't spend a lot of money on a bad piece of equipment. Thanks again. LETMGROW
In all honesty I haven't used any of them myself. I have tractors and larger equipment. I do use a 4-wheeler for rolling and dragging plots but everything else is done with the bigger equipment. Lynn
wtnhunt
Had a tow behind disc plow for a 4 wheeler at one time in Florida and it was ok in the sand, don't think it would work so well here where the ground is more firm. It takes a good bit of weight to break unworked ground and from what I have seen a lot of the "implements" for atv's are just too light. Some of the more expensive equipment on the market like the plotmaster look like they may actually be heavy enough to actually work but those are pretty expensive. About all I use our 4 wheeler for here is to drag plots, a tank sprayer, and also use a spreader, but most of the time anymore I will use our small kubota tractor for the spreader and the drag. Far as the mowers go I knew someone who had one of the tow behind swisher mowers and they tore it up inside about a years time. There may be some on the market that would hold up to light brush, I personally would not expect any of them to work as well as tractor implements. Muff
Once you get the grass down a plot mule works great.....but I would not use anything under a 500 to tow it. heres the one we use along with a small disc it cuts it up nice Edited March 31, 2012 by Muff
Ultradog
I've said this before but it bears repeating. Using a 4 wheeler to do tillage is a good way to wear out a rather expensive machine. Far better is to buy an old farm tractor like an Allis Chalmers model B, C or WD45 or even a Ford 8N to do that kind of work. Those old tractors were designed to do plowing and discing for thousands and thousands of hours with no ill effects. Tractors are cheap now due to the economy so you could buy an old bruiser for around $1K, use it for 10 years and resell it for at least what you paid for it. brad dryden
My experince with this yes you can buy OLD tractors cheap for example my brother baught a ford 8n a early model of $600 and yes it was gas. I hated this tractor it only had 4 gears it was to fast and not enough power to bush hog weeds but it would be good to run a post hole digger or a grain auger or even a small disc. You can pick up a old tricycle tracor cheap but remember they are easier to turn over. You can get a small bushhog for about $500 used and a small disc for $500-$800 at the right auction and plows seem to run about $300-$750. But then again depending on auction. ilhnter
Ended up getting a yamaha grizzley 550 and got an awesome deal on it at that. Also got the swisher trailcutter pull behind mower. Went out the other day and mowed one of the small fields on the property and it worked just as it should. Mowed it down and had no issues what so ever. Still looking at disks and such, but so far a good start. Thanks for all the info.
