My wife just opened up a Facebook account and I am holding out. I believe that social media has a lot of pitfalls to it that folks don't see or understand. However, I also see that there is a professional upside to it in terms of networking and advertising.

I need help to decide whether or not to eat a little crow and open up a Facebook account.

What do you think?

Dunno, this place count?

Yep, forums are a form of social media.

I have both a Facebook account and multiple Twitter accounts. Don't post to them much though. Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family scattered across the country or even word. Whether you open one up is up to you. I really don't see any pitfalls to it (please explain what you think they are), except that some people seem to use it too much.

By pitfalls I refer to those folks that put "a little too much info" on their pages and postings. I also believe it can aid in identity theft if one is not careful. I think some people don't realize that web information isn't all that secure, even if they think it is. I understand common sense comes into play here, but those are just my thoughts on it.

Ahh OK, i gotcha. I really don't post much on Facebook, the last "status" update I posted was back in January after the Michigan bowl game. Before that it was in September. As for information, I don't have much on there, probably the same stuff, if not less, than I have on my profile here.

The people I cant stand on there are the ones who put their whole lives on Facebook. Let me know when you get a promotion, or are expecting a child, or getting married, major things like that. I don't need to hear/read that you just got done vacuuming or are eating a sandwich. I "hide" people who post to much junk, and I block all of the games that people post on there.

It really is what you want to make it out to be, you can post as much or as little as you want, limit the people who can see your profile and updates, hide or block people and apps. Like I said, I just use it to communicate with friends and family around the country. If you use it right, it's really not that bad.

Good luck if you decide to try it out.

Social Media - Do you/Don't you

Yea, I have a Facebook page thanks to my wife. I have all the privacy settings set so that nobody can see a thing on it though. Like MIbowhunter, my family is spread across the country and it's great to see photo's so frequently. We use Skype for the same reason, not to mention its free. But, I dislike it for the same reasons previously posted. I must say however, during hurricane Irene (if you remember, VT got decimated) a LOT of people had no other way to communicate. Me and my family were evacuated by bucket loader and had about 3 minutes warning to pack up, this includes supplies for our 4 year old Diabetic daughter. The emergency shelter had power and WiFi, it was a lifesaver!

I've got a facebook and use it quite often. I don't have a Twitter account........doesn't sound manly when a guy says "I'm twitting."

Still don't have one Tracey. Lots of reasons why, but if I was a single man I would be on it. Great for lots of folks but I keep a low profile. :D

Either you had some rough girlfriends in the past or left behind girls with rough boyfriends/husbands.

I kid, I kid. :D

No I do not belong, and do not wish to belong.

I like how John(Redkneck) described it a few months back.

Opening up a facebook acct will be like making a scrape...too many would come by and pee in it.

Way too many misinformed youth on that facebook that post lots of anti hunting, anti conservative and Pro Liar in Chief things.

I see my son Joes facebook page, and he is always trying to educate his peers about hunting, conservation and gun ownership. But it seems that he is rowing up stream.

No thanks.

I don't even know how or what twitter is lol, I do do facebook, mostly for the entertaimment ....... it's amazing how many people put all of their problems there for the world to see :D and how some people can make themselves sound so stupid LOL

Never even seen the twitter site, nor do I really "get it". Facebook seems different to me, more ability to customize.

Many of the kids around here post pics of thier Hunting/Fishing trophies. The local paper even has a column for those Facebook pics.

Neither for me.

Never found the need or had the time to waste telling everyone what I was up to constantly on a Facebook page. The only people who need be privy to that info live under my roof.

As far as Twitter goes......................don't even know what it is. Reckon I will keep it that way.

Unsociable people have little use for social media.

I dont do spacebook or tweeter...if you post a message and it is "deemed" politically incorrect..it gets deleted...

Why participate if you are not free to express your veiws?

My wife Kim is on there but I cant stand even to look at the site..everytime I try to read something the screen moves and I loose my spot..it's like trying to read the chat room dialogue with 30 people rusing it

Not sure what sites you're looking at. I've NEVER seen anything get deleted by anyone other than the original poster (except posts I have hidden on my own). And I have seen some messed up crap on there. Unless you are talking about posting something on someone elses page. That user can delete anyones messeges that are posted to their wall. Facebook doesn't delete anything, it's the user. Never seen this screen moving thing either. When I'm on there most new posts show up on the side ticker and then a bar shows up at the top that says there are new posts (same for both Twitter and Facebook)
