I picked up a Kansas lease!

After some really hard work and a trip down to kansas to evaluate properties we found our lease! It's 350 acres in Neosho County. We have about 150 in woods, 125 in crp and hay and 75 in crops. We have 4 ponds and a creek running through as well. No cattle either! I'm looking for some advice from people on hunting down there and what you feel is best for food plots. Any help is appreciated.

Wheat and soybeans are the prefered crop down here. I'd advise that you find something a little different, alfalfa, oats, rie, austrian winter peas, turnips. There's a seed company out of Enid OK called Johnston Seed Co. they have seed just for this area and climate. Your a little farther east, but still same area. We use them for our food plots.

congrats! i'd say cover and whatever else isn't around. grown up crp fields with a tree here or there are gold mines. i've been to Kansas once, and not to hunt. the largest buck i've ever seen on the hoof was running through a grown up crp field. small field with clover and cover all around them.

My new sister-in-law has shirt tail relation in Eastern Kansas and we will be heading down there within 2 years to bowhunt too. The only thing I have heard about it is that it is much warmer down there in the end of October than it is here. The weather can make or break your hunt in a hurry.

I haven't ever had that much luck during late October, not to say you won't. I've had all my luck around the 10th or so of November. Usually it's a sure thing you'll either hit early rut or pre-rut, the big boys usually are cruisen either way, looking or fighting.

Warm down here would be anything around +50-60. I love Kansas bowhunting cause their seasons are set up for bowhunters. ML season is the last week in September, and the rifle season is the first week in December, which keeps the rifle hunters from hitting prime rut, but PERFECT for bowhunters!!

Where at in Neosho County? Our ground is along the Neosho River outside of St. Paul. Tim has hunted a few times. Simple clover or alfalfa seems to work pretty good, that time of the year there is mostly soy beans and corn. Everyone is right about the weather, its tough to predict. Could be in the 70's one day and the 30's the next.

I hope we covered everything I've experienced in our telephone conversation Pat. Good talking to ya! Local knowledge will be better regarding food plot plantings.

BTW...if you head that way to do any scouting during the summer months...ticks are pretty bad.

  • 3 weeks later...

GRRRRR....After having all the details set up the landowner decided he wanted us to drive another 12 hours back down to meet him and then sign the lease. After going round and round with him about this issue we decided to pull the plug and go with a different property in NE Kansas. I understand wanting to meet us, but that's what our orginal trip down there was for and he didn't make himself available then. Live and learn I guess
