Senate rejects GOP measure to build oil pipeline - CNN.com

"Opponents say the pipeline may leak, and that it will lock the United States into a particularly dirty form of crude that might ultimately end up being exported anyway."

2 things:

Why can't the bill determine that the oil (or portion of it) be for domestic use?

I'd like to get The_Kat's input on this, I'm, sure he'd have some insight as to the quality assurance aspect. Are pipelines like this a large source of oil leakage?

No brainer in my opinion, but I also think we should be drilling more here at home and be less dependant on foreign oil.

Obama himself prior to being elected said he wanted to see gas over $10 a gallon to help force the people in this country into more green energy, this was backed up by his energy secretary(Steven Chu) both before he got the job and after he got the job. Now that we are in an election year and people(voters) are hurting Chu has seemed to have had some sort of amnesiatic episode or maybe it is a case of what my wife calls "selective memory". Chu said he wanted our gas prices to be over $12 a gallon and also said he wanted the price to be comparable to that of Europe in order to force users to seek alternatives. What these green minded people don't realize is that not every household can afford to drop $45k on a chevy volt, which evidently has some issues in itself. Another interesting topic parallel to this topic, the energy failures of this admin, ie solyndra and a car that cost taxpayers tens of thousands per unit that has limited range. What could the half billion that got dumped into solyndra have done had it been put into the economy rather than fatcat friends of Obama's pockets? If that half billion were credited to taxpayers rather than taken from them, how might that have helped an economic recovery along?

My question is, why is it that the mainstream media is not every day reminding voters of the agenda of Steven Chu and this administration. This election should be a "no brainer" for every person who has a job they have to drive to and every person that has to drive day to day and also everyone who buys anything that is transported by means of oil based fuels. Hard to fathom how anyone can not see what is taking place.

Obama's arrogance in knowing what is best for us all is destroying this country and hurting millions of people, real sad that so many people just don't see it.

Everybody that HAS a job, it should be a No brainer...what about all the jobs that got shot down with Keystone..not to mention the spin off jobs..now they are trying to cover by suggesting an oil leak could happen..how many have happened in Alaska with that pipeline and the weather is far worse.

face it.. this admin. is not for jobs or economy ...

Just like Northern Wis., Dems shut down a mining bill here just to keep Gov. Walker from being able to say he helped create 3000 jobs..the Co. pulled out after the vote this week in Madison

the excuse?? pollution, water qualtiy, yadda yadda yadda..same ol treehuger mantra you hear with the pipeline

there are currently, in place and operating already, 425,000 miles of this pipeline already in use in america today. perhaps your heat source for your home, natural gas, is part of that pipeline. crude oil has been flowing freely all accross the u.s. for years, with no troubles yet. most notable is that alaska oil pipeline, predicted to be disasterous to wildlife in alaska for years before the line was actually built. the big spills and disaster to wildlife never happened. the proposed pipelines are

totally safe and have very limited spill/breakage factors. these breaks are typically from a contractor digging one up. but, overall, no real problems. the potential problem obama uses is simply another "excuse" to turn away american jobs. he wants us all poor and dependent on the goverment. it's called a socialist, and liberals are socialists. (communist, marxist, stalinist, you name the "ist" as they are all the same to me)

This administration has been groomed to do this to America under the "Hope and Change" smoke and mirrors. We are now getting what stupid people deserve (stupid people being the one's that voted him in). It is a roller coaster that you want to get off but can't.

Let's face it.........a mindless, dependent society is what keeps their machine running. They only need the media and endless government programs to keep the sheep fed.

Came out last week that energy secretary Chu when asked if he owned a chevy volt he answered that does not even own a car, sure he can sympathize with those of us who rely on having to drive to get anywhere and how these fuel prices are hitting us. Oh wait, he said he wanted gas 3-4 times higher than it is now. This administration's agenda is clear to anyone who opens their eyes.

"No Brainer"....

Steve raises an excellent point, I was wondering how much of this pipeline is in place. The thing that grates on me is these hybrids with a measly 50mpg rating. I owned a 1993 Saturn (American made mind you) that easily got 40+ mpg. This was all internal combustion. The real kicker is that company is now out business.

I totally agree the oil lobbyists have WAY to much influence on Congress. By all accounts domestic production is up, and our importation is down, why the pain at the pump?

why the pain at the pump?

GREED! and poor foreign policy.

When Bush and Cheney were in and the prices spiked over $2 a gallon and up near $3 a gallon after 9/11 a lot of people blamed the Bush administration saying Cheney used his power and that he was somehow manipulating the price to make himself profits. If I remember right there were even some members here suggesting they believed Cheney was somehow involved in the high prices. Some people even believed a conspiracy theory that Bush and Cheney were responsible for the horrific event of 9/11 and there really were no terrorists. Kinda got to wonder what those folks are thinking now that prices are higher than they have ever been at this time of the year? When the Bush admin left office the price for a gallon of regular unleaded was under $2 a gallon, was $3.64 here this morning.

Speculators drive the price; this administrations position on energy and the policy and the rising tensions in the middle east have contributed to excuses for the price to be driven higher and higher, all the while fattening the pockets of oil company ceo's. Obama and his energy secretary both have said they wanted fuel prices over $10 a gallon on more than one occasion, only reason they are not maintaining that position right now is purely political in an election year. Obama's lack of leadership and his poor relations with Israel have contributed to the tension in the middle east. If Obama wins in November we can expect gas prices to continue upward.

I've only heard one commentator actually mention that oil is traded in U.S. dollars and that part of the price problem is what looks like the start of hyper-inflation. Inflation drives oil prices. Blaming all of it on greed and eco-freaks is dangerous I believe. We may be blindsided.

Not placing blame solely on greed here Mark, I think Obama's policies on energy and his foreign policy have been the biggest factors in gas prices in this country being driven to record highs.

Inflation I think also goes hand in hand with the high gas prices and deflated value of our dollar, both of which I think Obama has contributed to the problems with. Really surprised that our economy is not more crippled than it is under the current circumstances.

Right now with the record high government spending we are broke again and both parties are trying to wait until after the election before raising the debt ceiling. Then prices will really take off and not just for gas.

The president does have a great deal of leverage as it comes to gas prices. If he lets us drill here on public land and offshore to increase our production the Arabs have incentive to lower their prices so that buying from them is more attractive. They do not want an interruption of their cash flow for sure. There's alot this jerk could do but he seems intent on ruining our economy so it can be rebuilt after a socialist plan which he is already putting into place (like Obama care).
