Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
Yep, happened my junior year in high school right before football practice. We were sitting around waiting for practice to start and I was sitting on a pile of blocking dummies, full pads, without my helmet. Next thing I know I am on the ground with everyone, including our line coach standing over me, was out for a couple seconds. Some senior thought it would be funny to get a running start and drill the few of us who were sitting there, the other couple guys saw it coming and jumped out of the way, I took a blind side hit from him going full speed. Had to sit out the rest of the week of practice and missed the game. He had to miss the game as well. Not really a good feeling.
The Bug House
Current hot topic in sports medicine. lots of research being done. Evidence suggests they are accumulative. Just ask Sidney Crosby, or better yet LaFontaine or Brett Lindros. A concussion is considered a "mild form of Traumatic Brain Injury". Hope you feel better. hogwild63
My son got hit during HS football practice on Sept 6th. He was double teamed blocked, sent flying backwards and the back of his head (with helmet on) hit the turf twice (bounced) and was out for a second or two according to the trainer. An hour and a half later, I arrived from work and we asked him what the play was. He could only say that he was on defense and that was all. He could not walk with out help. I took him the the emergency room and the CAT scan was ok. They are now treating concussions as TBI's. There is a five step protocol to return to play. First, you have to be headache free to start the protocol. 1) Ride stationary bike for 20 minutes and if there is no headache, go to #2, 2) Jog for 20 minutes - no headache, go to #3 3) Full practice without pads doing drills - no headsche, go to #4 4) Full practice with pads - no headache... 5) return to play. Not sure of the last two because he never made it to protocol 4 before the season ended 2 months later. He did not start the protocol for 2 weeks. They added running bleachers to the second protocol and he kept getting headaches. He is now playing HS baseball. He officially quit football this week. It is accumulative. The Neurologist said that the "casing" around the brain looses its "tightness" in a concussion and adults regain the tightness back sooner than youth AND it gets less tight with each "hit". I believe he did have some "smaller" concussions he did not report for fear of not playing and this one was a bad one. There is now an IMPACT study going on at the high school and they took baseline data on the freshman this year. My wife is a former cognitive therapist. Boy did I get the "I told you so". Be careful. cowboy778
Where to begin, took a hit from a 6'5" Simoan in Ca, we did not agree... I woke up in the ambulance with neck brace on. I broke his leg from what I was told. I bull rode for 6 years, Once I got hung under the bull and he kept kicking me in the back of the head. I got a few Concussions doing this. Those are just a few I think total I have had 6 concussions. :hammer1:
wtnhunt
Yep, probably too many. One of the worst of situation probably was getting smacked by a tree that snapped back and knocked me into the rops on the tractor. Think the force slamming my head into the rops was worse than the hit of the tree to my head, could have been a lot worse though if the tree had hit my neck or if the tractor had kept on going. You should be very proud of your school system for their program regarding your son's safety and health. Very thorough in my opinion. Seems as though too many so called coaches take the other road and want to have an injured player to manup and be a tough guy. I applaud your school for handling the injury like they did. Lynn
Shaun_300
Yeah taken quite a few blows to the head when I first got into the mechanical trade. The hoists only go up about 6 feet and I'm 6'4" so it took a while to learn to duck. Cracked my melon on the hoist and undersides of vehicles quite a few times. Not fun! Ravin R10 man
Yup...had a 3 inch diameter Ash spring pole load up from above and it hit my hard hat..split that in two, pile driven to the frozen ground, and totally knocked the wind out of me..I came to, my chainsaw was running and I could not breathe..I sat up and looked to see that I was not cut and bleeding..then I had to make myself take small little breaths..it took a few weeks for the effects wore off..if the forwarder dropped off a stump..the whole world started moving...lol
hoosierhunter
I've had three that I know of. My first was the worst one. I was knocked out for about 1 minute. I don't remember anything for about a 5-10 minute period. I was a keeper in soccer and a long ball was played and I came out. I was told I dove head first and beat him barely to the ball, I curled the ball into my body and got kicked in the back of the head. They said I then stood right back up and then crumpled in a heap on the field. I don't remember anything but seeing that long ball being played and starting to come out. Next thing I remember is sitting with my dad with a ice pack on my head.
Leo
If you're having trouble with your eyes after taking a hit, you need to go see a doctor. If bleeding has started inside your head things could get a lot worse before they get better. I cracked my skull from left side of my nose through the temporal bone to the back of my right ear. It put me in a coma for weeks. After I came out of the coma a bleed started again and almost killed me. Don't take a chance if you may have bleeding in your brain. The_Kat
Listen to Leo....if your not feeling right go to the emergency room and get looked at. I watched and continue to watch my dad suffer the effects of a brain injury. You don't wanna go down that road or anywhere near it. Get looked at and be safe. Hope you feel better! Thanks Kat, I hope your father is improving. The insidious thing about a head injury is the delayed effects that can occur hours or days after the initial injury. Swelling can pinch off blood vessels that don't start to bleed until the swelling recedes. When that happens things get much worse in a hurry.
