kcall
Whenever you set up a turkey decoy should you face it into the wind or downwind? Also what works better, hens, Jakes, or gobblers?
jesse8953
I donn't think wind direction matters, more than where you think a turkey is going to come from and where you are sitting.I like to use a jake decoy.sometimes a hen and jake decoy.I have had toms go the other way when they see a gobbler decoy[they must have gotten there butts kicked before]. Ethan Givan
The decoys I use depends on what time of the season it is. When turkey season first opens up here, birds are still in large groups. Usually 3-4 gobblers and several hens all together, and dominance is still being hashed out between them. I like to use a couple hen decoys with a gobbler decoy during this period. The gobblers cannot stand that full strut decoy with a couple hens, and will usually come running in to fight. Ive had alot of luck using this setup. After about the first week or so of season being in, I start using a single hen decoy. The flocks are busted up, hens are starting to nest, and gobblers have spread out. A lone single gobbler might shy away from a strutter decoy now. Towards the end of season I might not use a decoy at all.
Flintlock1776
I found Tom and sometimes Jake decoys would make a live Tom hang up out of range and not come in. Since then, I use three hens decoys each pointing in a slightly different angle on a 180 degree arc if you follow my description ( decoys at 9am; noon; and 3 pm - and I am at top of clock looking at the noon decoy). I have been lucky each year. Last year I even got two turkeys over the season. Maybe this year I will tag out with the three I am allowed. Good luck with whatever you decide to go with. kcall
turkey decoy setup Sweet! Last year was the first time to turkey hunt by my self and I saw 2 gobblers and a hen all out of range with no decoys!
dbHunterNY
i have 3 decoys two feeding hens and one is a upright hen. mid to later in the season a hen laying down without a stake works well with a tom in full strut though. i just don't have one.
