fly
Going to Idaho this spring to bear hunt. I'll be on the Lochsa River. Salmon swim up from the Pacific to spawn. It is legal in areas to fish for them, but I don't know how or more importantly - what - to use to catch them. I'm not a regular salmon fisherman so if the price gets too high for gear I simply will not do it. I may look into renting gear near Missoula MT. I have a light duty fly rod for small mountian trout and a baitcaster on a medium duty pole for bass fishing. I have 10 lb line on the baitcaster. I'm figuring I'd need a whole new reel and pole but don't know what kind? Any help is appreciated.

92xj
Use what you have. I have caught a 38lbs cat on a 5' ultralight with 4 lbs braided line. A few months ago Salmon fishing on the Columbia I caught a 9.5' sturgeon (300-400lbs) on a 8'6" salmon rod with 12 lbs braided. No need to purchase a salmon specific rod and reel, unless you are willing to give it to me when you leave! Then I will let you know exactly what you want to buy. I have no idea the size or how to catch the salmon over there or when their run is. The steelhead should be having a pretty decent run over there right now. They past us here on the Columbia a month or so ago, so inland Idaho should be picking up soonish, I would think.
