Ethan Givan
Finally, season is here! I hunted Saturday with no luck. Dealt with rain and wind, and never heard a gobble after 8:00am. Went out again this morning and didnt hear anything gobble on the roost. Finally about 7:45am heard a bird gobble about 150 yards away in the far corner of the field I was next to. I would call to him and he would answer, and it sounded like he was coming on a string. Then when he got about 80 yards or so from me just over the hill he started going away. After going all the way back to where I first heard him gobble, he started working my way again. I realized he was strutting along the high point of the field and was just walking back and forth, not really coming to my calls. After listening to him gobble and move back and forth for almost 45 minutes, he went completely quiet. I went quiet as well, hoping he would show up. Finally I saw some hens crest over the hill, and I saw the top of a tail fan behind them. The hens were working my way but then turned and headed back over the hill, taking the gobbler away with them. 15 minutes later I saw them again on the hill only a little further away, maybe 100 yards from where I sat. The hens started to come down the hill once again towards me, but once they spotted my hen decoy they turned and took the strutter back over the hill again. A few minutes passed and they appeared again to my hard right not 60 yards from me. Once again the gobbler was strutting in my direction, but the hens had a different plan and turned and walked around the corner of woods, taking him out of sight. At this point, Im getting really tired of these hens pulling this strutter away. As soon as he disappeared around the corner, I jumped up and ran up the edge of the woods. I knelt down and crawled to the corner, and sat down behind a big wild rose bush. I could hear the gobbler spitting and drumming on the other side, so I leaned out around the bush and dropped him at 30 yards. 24 lbs, 1 inch spurs, 9 inch paint brush, and unfortunately a missing tail feather lol
