Just wondering

Took a ride on the SS Wright a few months back. Floated from Baltimore to Norfolk, then down to around the Myrtle Beach area, and hung out a little ways off the North Carolina coast for a couple weeks. Other than that, I've just been on small fishing boats in the Atlantic when I was younger.

I've been on the water for over 37 years. Mostly inland waters comprised of the St. Lawrence River, the Ottawa River, Lake Ontario, the Welland Canal, Lake Erie, Detroit River, Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River. I'va also sailed on Lake Huron, Georgian Bay and Lake Superior, but not a lot. For the past 13 years of my career, I also sailed to the eastern arctic during the summer sailing out of Quebec City through the Gulf of St. Lawrence, through the Straits of Belle Isle to the Labrador Sea and Atlantic Ocean, through Hudson Strait, Ungava Bay, Frobisher Bay, Hudson Bay and the Gulf of Boothia near the Arctic Ocean. Believe it or not, the scariest trip I had was on Lake Ontario in a November storm with winds gusting to almost 100 mph. The next morning was spent with mallets and shovels, breaking and tossing the ice away so the ship didn't get top heavy and roll over. I did make one trip to Sydney, NS way back in '71 when I was 19. I got drunk, hung over and sea sick all at the same time when the ship sailed out into the Atlantic to test their ballast stabilization system. The drunk part came the evening before when I was cooerced into testing out the local taverns for the first time in my life. If you've never been hungover and seasick at the same time, the phrase, "Just shoot me!", will take on a whole new meaning!

Eyes is bin Screeched in as well in St. Johns as eyes was made ta kis 'da cod....along wit a few udder colourful activities! A definate hilight of my career! LOL

Although some of my sailing experience was on ships, I mostly ran small craft for most of my career.

I havent been out on the water but have been to the ocean several times. Wolf Islan Georgia, Florida, etc. I also go to the gulf of Mexico pretty regular for business. I was in Houston (texas city, deer park, etc) just a month ago. After working there I drove around the coast and went to Baton Rouge. I also get to go to New Orleans pretty regular. I head to the coast out there.

Hi guys, fairly new to the forum. I grew up in nova scotia and been out in the bay of fundy in a lobster boat. The day went out was pretty calm. Living on the bay I have seen some pretty big seas. My hats off to anyone who makes a living on the water fresh or salt.

You know I have. I've been a commercial fisherman and I've worked for the Dept. Of Fisheries and Oceans .

Here's a couple of boats I've been on.

This was on a Fisheries Vessel, while along side a fisherman. That's me in the red shirt.

This is the Tanu, one of the larger Fisheries vessels I worked on

The Chilco Post. Another fisheries boat. I loved working on this boat, because we went up all the inlets on the west coast

I wish I had of taken more photos back then.

i've been on cruises all along the east coast and into the eastern carribean. I've been deep sea fishing from Maine to Florida. On a lobster boat once somewhere along the northeast coast, forget where. I've even been out, down around Cancun, Mexico. even been on smaller boats to where it was so rocky you walked the whole deck just to get to a spot six feet away. Gulf is a much different experience than the Atlantic. Parent's just bought a place with a canal system from the backyard right out to the gulf. so i'll have some more experience on the gulf.

I grew up in NYC and spent lots of time on the bays and shores around NYC fishing blues, stripers and flipping EVERY rock I could to see what was under it on the shore. A few years ago I took a trip to Montauk( The end of Long Island) and made it out to the Canyon on a 65' Bertram. It is about 10 miles off shore where the seas floor drops to about 400'. We were fishing for Mako shark. A great experience. Make sure you do it on a good sized boat. I have also been to the Jersey beaches too numerous times to count to swim the Atlantic.

Oh Yeah...I also ran out of gas on a jet ski way out in the water when I was in the Bahamas back in 01...Glad they came looking for me :).

HEY Buckee! I worked for DFO as well. Well the Canadian Coast Guard branch for 37 years in the Central & Arctic Region. While the vast majority of my career was with small craft, I did spend time on the ice breakers and buoy tenders. And you are correct, as I too wish I'd taken a heap more pictures. The experiences I was exposed to was incredible and I couldn't have wished for a better career.
