Turkeygirl
I'm not too sellphone savy...all I've used is a Tracphone with a minutes card. With my new job, I am going to need a better phone, more minutes, betetr reception etc...I will have calls from paients/families/and work. I don't want to break the bank but I think I'll be using it alot more than I want! A few have recommended the iPhone... Any recommendations/thoughts? Dawg
I'd stay away from iAnything. Too much of a hassle to download ringtones and apps. I've had the Motorola Droid for a couple of years now, to put it simple......it's awesome. I just upgraded to the Droid Razr Maxx and am waiting for it to arrive. RangerClay
Ruth I'm not too savy with these new phones today. However, if you are happy with the reception you got with your Trac Phone you may want to go with Verizon service because they use the same towers. Turkeygirl
Oh, I am not happy with TracPhone at all...the reception stinks...big time Yeah I was wondering about the Motorola ...

redkneck
Love my new Galaxy S II. Great speed and features, much more display than iPhone. What the question is for you Ruth is are you ready to step up to a monthy bill that's going to be in the 50-70 dollar range? Once you get into the smartphone price range your going to be obligated to it for a couple years. Smart phones are great, no end to the apps out there, from forums, to hunting/fishing times, banking, GPS, ebay, everything you can imagine is a touch away, but you'll pay a premium over what your doing now. gzilla45
Carrier reception varies greatly from area to area. I'd talk to some people in your area to find out what carriers have the best service and go from there. I've found my Android phone to be very reliable and easy to use. Smart phones do require the more expensive plans though so that is something to be thinking about.
Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
You can't go wrong with an iPhone, I have had 2 of them and they have been great. If your not planning on using the features of a smartphone though, just get a regular phone. The plan will be cheaper as well. I am on a family plan with my parents through AT&T and the bill for our 2 phones is around $115 a month, $30 of that is for my unlimited data plan. $20 is for my unlimited text. The rest is for the talk minutes, we get 450 a month and what ever we don't use rolls over. Mobile to mobile, and nights and weekends are free, so we have over 3700 rollover minutes saved up. Some providers are better than others in certain areas. I'd check around and ask who has the best service in your area then check the plans for them. ruttinbuc
Oh, I am not happy with TracPhone at all...the reception stinks...big time Yeah I was wondering about the Motorola ... Ruth , you need to seek advice from those who have mobile phones in your area. The service in the area is more important than the phone. I have a tracphone and I never had a problem with getting connected in most areas. They rent airtime from many of the major cell providers including Verizon. There may be more to the problem with your location than anything.

shawn8157
Hate to be the one to break it to you, but they all suck and are way over priced! I have a DROID and I guess I'm happy with it ( other than the fact in rings all the time). I know you have to have one for job, so my best advice is to talk to some Co workers and find what is good in your area. Its funny because my wife has an iPhone, we both have Verizon, yet there's places were my phone gets out and hers doesn't and vise versa. After all that, all I can say for sure is that which ever phone/provider you chose will over charge you! Good Luck with the new job and the cell phone dilemma. redkneck
Just find a carrier you like and go shopping Ruth and get something newer than this: If you don't want to spend the extra 20-30 a month on data plans, then there's still plenty of great phones out there better than what you have. Turkeygirl
I think I'm going to try to find a Verizon, seems to have the best coverage area, some decent phones, does have $50 unlimited prepaid vs 2 year contracts and plans... stevebeilgard
being technologically disadvantaged, i have a wall mart phone and for 30 bucks a month i have 1000 unlimited minutes. they do not work in canada or alaska, but everywhere i travel in the lower 48 i have service. it's the best dollar value i know. it also has texting and other features, but refer back to the technologically disadvantaged thing. lol
Shaun_300
My girlfriends mom and dad each have an iPhone, they're both in their 60s and operate them like kids LOL. My brother also has one and loves it, lots you can do with the modern cell phone that I never thought I needed but ended up using. I had an old Samsung a920 for about 5 years and finally broke down and got a Blackberry Bold 9700 about a year and a half ago. Lots of nice features on it, you don't have to get a data plan but if you want to email and use the web on it you definitely need it. Not sure what plans are in the USA but I have the cheapest data plan available through Bell (company like AT&T in the States) and it runs $50/month. I added call display which adds another $7 on it. After all the other charges it runs approx $70/month.
Stinger-Hunter
Get an Iphone. it is a bit more expensive but it is well worth it. You will become more tech savvy just because they are so easy to use. You'll love it. Go with Verizon.
dbHunterNY
What Mike said is what i'd go with get a service with good coverage. also if you're in a bombshelter of a building, it might not matter as much. in general, the cheapest phones have the best reception, because they have larger antennas. they don't need to room for any other hardware or accessories. for cheaper phones i'd recommend LG or Samsung, in that order. you're around a $40 per month for a basic plan. if you go with a smart phone, the iPhone or Evo are popular ones. battery life sucks and you'll have to charge it every day. you'll want to get unlimited data too. around here plans are between $60-90 a month. Adjam5
Ruth a lot has to do also with what plans the folks you willbe getting calls from and what carrier they use. because as you know with cell phones you pay in and out with calls. I work in Lower Manhattan. Ground Zero, and you would think that I'd have the best signal around...NOT! The buildings are built like Fort Knox so it drains the battery and I almost never have 4 bars of signal. I have been through almost every cell carrier and found that verizon works best for the places I travel to often(NYC to the Catskills). I did have a heck of a time getting service in South Texas this past Febuary. So the area you travel will weigh heavily on the service you will have.I do not have a data plan. I wait until I am home to use the net. I also have a mil spec phone that is shock proof and water proof. The Casio Brigade. Quite durable, good for texting and the woods. Verizon seems to be the best in my experience. Edited April 18, 2012 by Adjam5
waterfowler
Well one of the major problems with smartphones is that the battery only lasts a day if your lucky (dependin on what you are using and how much you are using it)
Turkeygirl
Well I finally ended up with a Verizon LG 3G for$0.97 with a 2 year contract....Now just trying to figure this thing out!
