A Bird for my Son

It's rare these days when I get a call from my son wanting me to take him turkey hunting but the middle of last week I did. I was planning to rest up before driving to Missouri Sunday but no way if he wants to go.

Saturday morning at gobbling time we hear a bird with a weak gobble. Hummm...opted to check another area to listen for more. Nothing there but we hear the distant gobble of the weak gobbling bird. OK...we'll give him a go. After stopping to check his exact position he gobbles in the tree. As we ease in his next gobble is ground level. Using the opposite side of the ridge he was roosted on we move around to set up. 2 different slates...no answer. I cut with my Woodhaven Red Wasp...he answers. I gobbles closer and a hen on the other side of us answers him. He makes his mark there out of site & eases into the bottom. No choice but to get down there with him. Using a drain off the side of the ridge we work our way into the bottom between him and the hen. No answer on a slate or my mouth call now. Break out the Primos Cutter box call. He really liked it cutting us off with the 1st call. As we watch for movement of him over a slight rise in the bottom the hen comes across the side of the ridge to our bird. Not good! I hammer away with the box firing him up again. A few minutes later we see 2 heads bobbing around over the rise. The hen closes in to ~15 yards with the gobbler 10 yards behind her. She begins to get nervous and moves toward the ridge. Take him...which one dad...the one straight in front of us...a load of 5's from his gun hits home flipping him over. My son races over to check out his trophy. I'm still trying to stand up while he's hooping and hollering. Been about 5 years since he's scored so I'm fired up too. We high five and check him out. This weak sounding gobbler sported 1 1/8" spurs with a 10 1/2" beard. Just goes to prove you can never be sure what a gobbler is based on the sound of his gobble.
