Turkeygirl
I was shopping on Cabelas and saw they have some turkey ammo on sale in 20 ga. which is hard to find in stores here. I have a H.S. Undertaker choke that is .572 ... First question is that bigger or smaller than a .665 choke? Cabelas has Federal Flight control on sale but it's recommended to use through a .665 or larger choke. Cabelas also has Heavy Metal turkey loads on sale....Would I be able to shoot those through my current choke you think?
Ravin R10 man
unless I read this wrong; http://www.chuckhawks.com/choke_chart.jpg Ruth .572is a tighter pattern than a .665 stick with the Undertaker for sure GREAT CHOKE!!! and yes the Heavy metal loads will work just fine..I'd go with #5 I forgot to buy Win # 5 turkey loads, so I used my 3 and 1/2 " goose loads Win. super steel 1300 FPS 1& 9/16 oz. #2 I put my mod choke tube on instead because I was unsure of sending steel thru the undertaker..I wanted to be safe than sorry..I was safe..the Turkey was sorry..lol Edited April 25, 2012 by Mathews XT Man
Leo
The .665 choke is a popular exit diameter for a 12ga Turkey choke not a 20ga. 20ga will be smaller .565-.575 Most Undertaker chokes I'm familiar with have ports on them. You DO NOT want to shoot Flight Control ammo through a choke with ports! The flight control wad is notorious for hanging up on ports making follow up shots extremely dangerous. With really tight chokes and the flight control wads, the wad can hang up and burst the barrel. The flight control wad usually is best for someone who only has a Factory Full choke. Try Winchester Extended Range #6s (Cabelas doesn't show these loads in 20ga on line) The Winchester Supreme High Velocity turkey loads are also a good load. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Ammunition/Shotgun-Ammunition|/pc/104792580/c/104691780/sc/104567580/Winchester-Supreme-High-Velocity-Turkey-Loads/740961.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Fshooting-ammunition-shotgun-ammunition%2F_%2FN-1100191%2B4294751469%2B4294751464%2FNe-4294751469%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BBRprd739993%26WTz_st%3DGuidedNav%26WTz_stype%3DGNU&WTz_l=SBC%3BBRprd739993%3Bcat104567580 Edited April 25, 2012 by Leo
wtnhunt
Selection on 20 gauge stuff here is kinda limited too. You might want to give remington nitros a try before spending money on high dollar turkey loads Ruth. The girls 20 gauge patterns pretty well with the #5 nitro's. I assume you've got the HD version of the undertaker. otherwise maybe stick with lead or buffered lead. i think in general bigger shot works better with a slightly more open choke and vise versa. I've got a bunch of the heavyweight flightcontrol stuff, so i'm trying to see how it works best. for stock flush chokes i'd start with a factory full for #6s and factory med for #5s then go tighter from there with what chokes you've got. Turkeygirl
I just have the regular Undertaker. I actually have found in the years Federal Mag Shok #5 seem to shoot well, was just wondering if any of those shells were better. I need to pattern with my new sights so today might take it out and pattern it first with some small game shells to get the sight adjusted then through in the turkey shells. Those three numbers after the decimal represent diameter in thousandths of an inch. a 20ga cylinder bore is .620" or .62 caliber. Typical choke diameters for your 20ga Mossberg® are as follows.......... .620 Cylinder .610 Imp Cyl .600 Modified .595 Imp Mod .590 Full .585 X-Full Turkey chokes for a 20ga typically range from .585 all the way down to .550 (28ga Cyl Bore Diameter). Here is a pattern of Federal® Flitecontrol® Mag-Shok® 3" Mag 1185fps 1 5/16oz #5 Pb (#PFC258F 5) fired through my 20ga Mossberg® with a .555" diameter choke..... Here is a pattern of Federal® Flitecontrol® Mag-Shok® 3" Mag 1185fps 1 5/16oz #6 Pb (#PFC258F 6) fired through my 20ga Mossberg® with a .555" diameter choke..... Lastly here is a pattern Federal® Flitecontrol® Mag-Shok® 3" Mag 1185fps 1 5/16oz #4 Pb (#PFC258F 4) fired through my 20ga Mossberg® with a .584" diameter choke..... Turkeygirl
Thanks for the pics.... I re-shot my Mossberg today with the x-full choke in it and Federal Mag Shok #5s...shoots great out to 25 then by 30/35 yards the patterns opens up and seems to hang to the left slightly. Ordered some Rem. Nitros and Winch. Hi Velocity from Cabelas to try soem time during the week since I can only turkey hunt till noon. when season starts Tuesday. Hate being last minute but want to see what pattern I can get out of my gun the best.
