AaronS
Re: map/compass orienteering [ QUOTE ] Am going to by a gps, (any suggestions [/ QUOTE ] Magellan Meridian Gold. I have a Garmin eTrex Vista which is a very nice unit. It does what it is supposed to do but I wish I had bought the Magellan instead because of its larger screen and removable/upgradable memory. Orion_70
Re: map/compass orienteering For the Gps I would recommend the Garmin etrex vista.. It works great.. Here's a website for the basics http://www.marinescoutsniper.com/sniperknowledgepages/mapreading.html I'd just play around with it some locally, like Adk said, once you learn you never forget, just get a little rusty. AaronS
Re: map/compass orienteering If you decide on the Garmin, I would part with mine for the right price. It comes with all the mapping software.
AJ
Re: map/compass orienteering Whdn I hunted Colorado a few years ago I took my GPS and a good high quality compass. When I went into the dark timber, the thick canopy made the GPS unit useless. I used my compass and checked some landmarks. When I go back, I will leave the GPS in camp as its just extra weight. I know the compass will get me back. The only benefit I could see with a GPS is to mark a downed animal so when you make the return trip for meat you can find it quickly.
