hoosierhunter
Sunday was an unforgettable day for sure. My dad has only taken one bird and that was last season. Ever since he can't stop talking about turkey hunting. I was back in town to help with some stuff around the farm and just getting ready to head for home about 6 pm. I decided to head past one of the farms and check for birds. When I pulled up I couldn't believe my eyes. There were 4 stutters and at least 3 more non-stutters and hens everywhere! I had a good feeling on where they would end up for the roost and called dad and said we need to get set up on them. He wasn't sure, but I got him talked into slipping into blind where I thought they would go. It set up perfect because we have a buffer strip with a blind in it where we could get to about 200 yards away and they would have no clue. I headed back with the gear to get it ready and dad was following a little behind. When I got to the blind the birds were much closer than I thought they would be. I get everything set up and dad is still about 30 yards away and the birds start heading right for us fast! I'm scrambling to get his attention and say hurry up. Thankfully the wind was blowing about 15mph right at us and the birds couldn't hear. Dad gets to the back of the blind and two toms are already at 40 yards and closing. Complete chaos is going on and dad falls coming into the blind. I finally get him in and set down and now the two birds have worked out of the shooting lane and are not in sight and the others are working about 100 yards in the same direction away from us. I figure the gig was up at this point. I hit the box call a few times and the closest bird I can see it about 120 out strutting. I keep asking dad if he can see them and he's says right here! I can't believe it, but here comes a big bird from the left. He moves into the lane at about 35 yards and I say kill him. 10 seconds pass and I give a more animated KILL HIM!!!! Dad says, I can't theres too much brush!! On que, he clears right and BOOM, dads bird is down! We did it! We are giggling like school girls and hugging and here comes another bird wanting some revenge! He's got a rope that like I haven't seen before. I'm thinking is this really happening??? He gets to 45 yards and perks his head up. BOOM, I send a 3.5 inch load of 6's straight into his head! The double is complete!!!! We head out to see our trophies. Dad's bird was a Boss Tom for sure. He weighed 28.4 lbs. 9 5/8ths beard. His one spur was 1 3/8ths with the other missing. I look at my bird and realize that rope is a big double beard! He weighed 22.5 lbs. His beard was 10 5/8ths and 8 4/8ths! His spurs were 6/8ths and 7/8ths. Dad doesn't get to spend as much time hunting as he used to and words just can't explain what that hunt means to me.
