hoosierhunter
Last weekend we were working on food plots and I got a big suprise. We decided to break apart and I went to spread potash and urea on two plots while the two other guys finished planting two others. Two things were different that day, normally we never split up and one of us always has their handgun on them. I was just finishing up my second plot and heading around to the other side of the property. As I'm pulling out, I see a pickup pulling back into the area. I don't know this truck and we have had some serious issues here before. So I call my buddy and he puts a call into our law enforcement friend. At that point, this guy has parked his truck in front of me and is getting out. Upon seeing him and his body language I realize this situation has problems written all over it and then I realize I don't have a gun in the truck. The thought of oh boy this is not good then hits me, but at this point my only option is to confront this man. Here's the conversation: him-what are you doing here and who are you? me-What, that doesn't matter, but your not allowed to be here him-oh yeah, who says so. I've coming out here from years. me-what the heck, you've been tresspassing for years? him-oh yeah, if you don't own it, you can't stop me. me-that's doesn't matter you can't be here. him-who are you, you can't tell me that, you don't own it. me-that doesn't matter, I manage this and you can't be here. him-you can't tell me where I can and can't be. me-I can here because you can't be here. him-what do you own out here. me-all over him-where me-again that doesn't matter. all that matters is that your tresspassing. him-I really don't see a problem with it, I'm not hurting anything. me-well we've had a bunch of problems out here over the years. him-really I never see anyone out here. what were you doing out here. me-work and that doesn't matter. I got a guy on the way you need to talk to. him-who is it. does he own the property. me-He's the guy you need to talk to. Follow me up to the road and we will wait on him. He will be here soon. him-you already called him. me-yes he will be here soon him-yeah I'd love to meet him. me- he will be here soon follow me. him-ok Thank god because this conversation was much more colorful and longer which I cannot post. He follows me up to the road and I conveniently park where he's going to have to really work to leave around me. He gets out and comes back up to the truck, thankfully it's a busy road with many cars so I'm less worried up there. him-how long before he gets here. me-maybe 5 minutes. him-(at this point his tone changes)well I didn't mean no trouble, I'm just looking for mushrooms. me-what made you think you could just go where ever you want? him-I know the neighbor and have been out here for years. me-what made you think were allowed here. him-I wasn't hurting anything. me-that's irrelevant. 15 more minutes go by and this guys says how long until he's here I got places to be. At this point no way I can let him leave now when I'm this close to having him. I stall the conversation for another 10 minutes and the guys proceeds to aplogizing multiple times to me, but he still doesn't know he's about to meet law enforcement instead of the landowner. finally the DNR pulls in. When he sees him get out of the truck and the uniform he says, well I guess I'm in more trouble than I thought. Amazingly he tries to tell our buddy that he's allowed on the railroad part of the property because he works for them. When asked what railroad, he says the company. Our buddy says well there's three problems there, first even workers aren't allowed on the property without written permission, second that railroad doesn't operate these tracks and third you aren't on railraod property, your on private property. Then we says well the property wasn't posted so it doesn't matter. You can imagine the respond that he got from that one. Long story short, he writes him up and sends him on his way. I was very fortunate that this situation didn't go the other way given how it started. Everything turned out ok, but I could tell that this guy was down for whatever could have happened. Every year you hear about controntations in the woods that have dire reprocussions. It's amazing to me how poeple breakng the law have no regard. Needless to say, that's the last time I enter the woods alone without protection on me. Whew!!!!!
mgreene18
down on my property we have found truck and 4wheeler tracks all over the place. A few times we have found shotguns shells when we all use rifles for deer hunting. A couple years ago we were sitting by the truck eatin lunch and listening to a college football game when we saw a couple of kids with the whole thug mentality walking past us. We asked what they were doing and they just said walking around and kept on walking towards the exit of the property. We also had an old man pull up by the gate and didnt see us til we approached him. He said he was looking for his dog then quickly turned around no questions asked and left. It amazes me how disrespectful people can be to someone who pays good money to hunt and they walk in like they are entitled to it. You're lucky you had DNR show up, ive heard stories which ended with guns bein drawn
whitetailfreak55
Ya I've heard the same stories very lucky that nothing else happened. I had kids poaching on a property I hunt and the land owner called me because I also coon hunt and it was at night. Long story short the dnr didn't get there in time and they got away
wtnhunt
Glad it turned out with the lawbreaker being caught and having to faceup to a leo. Shame the ticket most likely was no more than a slap on the wrist. You had a cam stolen a while back didn't you? Being he admitted to going on the property for some time kinda wonder if this guy might be responsible or know who was? It amazes me how disrespectful people can be to someone who pays good money to hunt and they walk in like they are entitled to it. Sadly respect these days is seeming to become much like common sense, really not so common anymore. Seems more and more people could care less about anything other than themselves and that applies to so much these days.

brad dryden
I think we have all had issues before glad to see some one finally got what was coming to him. One of the issues we had here on trhe farm was you give permision to one person next thing you know you have a dozen people randomly showing up ridding saying they had permison and that was the end of leting people ride on the farm at all

Rhino
Pat, that encounter sure had the potential to go downhill in a hurry. For your sake, I sure hope he got the message he's not welcome.
swohiodave
I am glad it turned out well for you. Last year we caught a guy eyeballing a treestand 50 yards behind my friends uncles house. When we asked him what he was doing he said looking for ginseng and that he knew the owner. He said the owners fathers name who has since been passed for years. We told him he was trespassing but would be more than willing to go talk to the owner with him since he is sure he had permission. He decided to leave, fast.
