redkneck
Automotive manufacturing has been good to me the last 15 years, but I see trouble ahead for our little company. Vehicles are fast becoming equipped with electric power steering, leaving our little hydraulic-based business behind and I don't think my 70 y/o boss is up to the challenge of making the transition. Chevy 1/2 ton platform phases into electric steering next year with the K2XX platform and that will just about drive the last nail in our coffin. redkneck
Walmart door greeter. That would be a great job for me, though I doubt the pay would keep up with my wife's spending habits. Besides I don't think my age would let me work there, still a few years too young. Shaun_300
Really now the trucks are going with EPS?! Geez. I know, it's a frustrating industry, they try and overcomplicate things severely. I get so ticked off at the newer vehicles sometimes how they operate. Geesh, hit a window switch and it has to tell a module to turn the motor on, instead of having a 2 cent relay in place like they've had for the past 50 years, they put a 200+ dollar module to do the same thing. Good luck with the future career choices John, like Kyle said the oil fields would be something to look into.
Adjam5
Any chance of the employees purchasing the company and rolling with the changes in the industry John?
Dawg
Dude i'm telling ya, Walmart door greeter is where its at man........think of how entertaining that job would be! redkneck
Kyle I've thought about doing like a couple of my friends are doing and working as electricians servicing land rigs, not that I'm ready at this point for that, but definitely good long term outlook and good paying jobs. Anthony our business model is screwy. My uncle actually owns the company, we've been a dedicated GM supplier since the mid 80's, and honestly I don't know if I would risk money in it even if it was for sale and I had the funds. The steering business is really going through lots of changes right now. Shaun the 2012 models are going to phase in EPS next spring and go through the entire half ton line-up with Escalades finishing up by next fall. Avalanche is being axed from what I hear. Test equipment to build and test gear boxes, rack and pinions, and pumps can range from 10-30k and are flexible to do many models, test equipment for EPS products can run well over 100k for only one platform and there's still no guarantee you are producing a good product unless the mfg is giving you some of their proprietary info on their algorithms in the car. In other words the crap is over my head lol. Corey you're a smart guy, I'm gonna give that some thought. The_Kat
I'll tell yall something I've been looking into for a business start up. CNG conversion in vehicles and home CNG station installations. It's fairly new and not many businesses around....not in Okla or Colo at least.
redkneck
None here either. It's coming though, too much gas coming into the market and that's going to be a good thing for all of us.
redkneck
Also Shaun, GMT900 is supposed to be around till about 2013 but only as a work truck series.... or at least from what I'm hearing, everything else is going to be called something, who knows what, but internally they are calling it K2XX. Maybe the X's will be replaced by numbers on the new platforms, who knows. Even the 3/4 ton is going EPS pretty quickly. Wife's cousin has done really well as a mud engineer/consultant, friends have done well doing electrical work, several specialty jobs there worth considering. stevebeilgard
walmart aint to bad fo a place to work imo all tho i work midnights and dont see to many costumers i certainly did not mean anything bad about wal mart. i've worked with them for years in the past, and always had a good time. they are a good company, and i'm glad to see the greeters there. they hire on the old folks who need a job, and i appreciate that. i do have a problem with them buying everything in china, and no american grown beef. Adjam5
I got it John!!! How about all of us together start a "Green company"...apply for gazzilions of dollars from the Feds and just not pay it back? That way none of us would have to worry about work ever again...except when we tell stories about.

redkneck
I know exactly where you're coming from Anthony. Seen it time and time again and makes me sick.I could sleep better at night if I grew and sold pot! Good call though, you could make some cash like a guy I know that opened an ethanol station down here a couple years ago, knowing it was doomed from the start.
