cropleya
I am having trouble killing birds with my bow. Had trouble in the past during the fall seasons. I'm hitting the birds but they are not dying. So this spring I changed broad heads to a rage expandable. Can't recall the name of it but it has over a 2 inch cut and a blunt point on it. I'm aiming at the wing. The arrow went clean threw the bird and he just stood there for about ten seconds then flew. Had lots of breast feathers on the ground as well. Could my problem be to close was at 10 yards. Bow to fast. Or not aiming high enough up on the wing to break it. Any help would be great thanks. pointing_dogs_rule
If you had breast feathers on the ground sounds like you hit the breast and NOT the wing. Best to shoot a tom in the NON-strutting position so you can accurately judge the wing position. If you hit them where you were aiming then that bird would be dead. Try a front on shot at the top of the beard. This might help you out. good luck to all the dog
Turkeygirl
Sounds like you need to do some target practice as well....poor birds

cropleya
Target practice not the problem. I believe it was shot placement. The bird was not strutting and was broadside.
dbHunterNY
Really good stuff not just on these forums but on realtree in general. sounds like you've got a problems with placement which can be a little tricky at times. a tom looks much bigger than he actually is when strutting. check this out.... 92xj
I have killed 2 with my bow. Both were neck shots. After body shooting a bird and having it fly off, I told myself I would never take another body shot. I put the two kill shots at the base of the neck. Both birds dead instantly. With an arrow the head and neck are the kill shots. Look at the inside of a turkey, the vitals are smaller that the head and neck. Aim mid front breast for a body shot but be prepared to track them.
