Can't believe all these bear sightings and I haven't seen one yet while hunting for years. There's now a season for them in this area (southern zone) of NY which will hopefully keep them in check. dbHunterNY Posted May 21, 2012 Author Report Share Posted May 21, 2012 you got that right steve.... the bear was tagged and relocated straight line distance of 90 miles away and still found it's way back again. a few people have said they should've relocated it further away. at that point any further away wouldn't have made the least bit of difference. you can't allow a bear to continuously roam populated areas looking for food. there's too many scenarios that'd lead to a mauling even if the bear didn't have the intentions of attacking. a bear being unintentionally cornered or startled will create a bad situation. bears normally try everything to avoid human contact. one that doesn't care to keep its distance is much more dangerous. it just kills me. the same people who complained about it being shot, would be the first to point fingers at NY DEC if the bear were to maul and most likely kill a student on campus it was last around. then they'd complain that DEC should've shot it sooner. similar mentality around here with deer. they're "sweet little creatures" until the person hits them with their car, and then the person thinks the deer are a nuisance and should be wiped out. Adjam5 Posted May 21, 2012 Report Share Posted May 21, 2012 I agree. There has been a lot more Bear activity around NYS for quite some time. That Bear was a 300lber on the vid. Too close for comfort. I used to go about our land trimming trees and pruning Blueberry bushes with nothing but a branch lopper and saw. I go out armed now when I enter the woods. Last year was our first ever Bear season here in Rockland county. 40 miles from NYC. 2 Bears were taken, one right in my town another one town over. Their range is growing for sure.
