Ohiobucks
Interesting science experiment, but still just another canned hunt, like shooting fish in a barrel...
dbHunterNY
i could see it being good for were there's something unforeseen that cause deer numbers in an area to drop low enough. i could see using it to build up deer numbers quicker and with the same genetics. that guy's hunt is what it is. it met something to him so i've got no issues with it. i'll take a P&Y 10+ pointer here over that there any day though. wtnhunt
Big money can GROW big bucks, one way or another. To each their own I guess, although I think we get to a degree of going too far with some of these bio-engineering.
Ravin R10 man
the buck probably cost him around 25,000 I guess I'd like to see some offspring from it too..hopefully he can sell the fawns and recoup some of his money back from the hunt. dbHunterNY
good point Martin... whenever you look at those high fence places & hunting fees the 200"+ bucks have "call for pricing" next to them. lol the b&C size ones are over $10k too. crazy one would pay that much. Yep. I see lots of them that say to call for pricing over 180" but you been net it's over 20k. Interesting reading I thought though.
Rhino
Maybe it's just me but the story doesn't seem to be so much about the hunt but the chance at trying to introduce some of those genes into wild deer in Louisiana. The hunt is not my cup of tea but you have to commend the guy for doing what he did to...well his thoughts shared were..."wouldn’t it be nice if other hunters could see a deer like this in the wild." Sounds to me like he tried to do something extra for others hunting wild deer. Will be interesting to see where this process goes though. dbHunterNY
yea Al like i said in my original post i could definitely see that whole process helping with quicker regeneration with better recruitment where something unforeseen wiped out the deer. using the same genetics the deer will be best to adapt and survive in the particular region they came from. he spent a ton of money most likely, but hey it definitely meant lot to him. cut me down, but for that reason i'm ok with it, high fence or not. also he's trying to get the most from the experience and help others some too. elkoholic
They talk about preserving the genes of bucks in the wild, but there was no buck in the wild involved, nor were the doe that were impregnated, in the wild. The talk of taking a "buck of a lifetime" is a farce when the hunt involved shooting preserve (fenced in) deer that were probably laced with growth hormone and steroids. Deer under those conditions of year round high quality feed with added "supplements" and bred for antler growth are more a detriment to the wild population than an aid. Deer hunting has become like a dog show. Just how much can we change an animal by selective breeding and chemical means to meet our human expectations/wants. Larger antlers may look more impressive hanging on the wall, but do not make a better deer, nor do they make for a better hunt. Trophy antlers should not be like buying a cadillac. Just because you have the money and want it, does not mean you should be able to buy it. So, is this what hunting is becoming? A falsely inflated ego. Wonderful. dbHunterNY
we all know what most hunters think of high fenced hunts. i personally don't care so much about that. i think if you just read the first two and last three paragraphs to get the interesting stuff. it sounds like the process hasn't been done much yet with wildlife application. they talk very briefly about what it could be used for. i think the source happened to be from the "champion buck" because it sounds like it was convenient. otherwise beating the guy for going on a canned hunt is like beating a dead horse. lol ....that's what i think.
