wtnhunt
Figures with the way my luck goes something had to break in the kitchen just out of warranty. We were told dishwashers and fridges were the most common to develop problems so I put the extended warranty on both of those and not on our range or on the microwave. Microwave just a little over a year after we got moved in is now for whatever reason not working right. We did not go with a cheap microwave, was one of maytags higher priced units, also is a convection oven. First thoughts I thought the magnetron on it was gone or going because it was not heating well or at all on the normal full power setting. The magnetron is covered for 7 years under the warranty, but now not so sure that could be the problem. Tried a few things like unplugging it and letting it sit a while and then playing with the power settings and after playing with the power settings, discovered that it seems to be working fine on other levels, just not at the default 100%. Anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be or on a fix?

wtnhunt
Id thow it and go get another one Wish that was an option Martin, unfortunately we don't have money laying around to go and throw this one out and replace it. Guess if nothing else we can just get used to having to heat stuff a little longer on adjusted power settings.
stevebeilgard
how about removing it, taking it to the authorized repairman, and getting an estimate of what's wrong and how much to repair? i say take it to them to avoid a service call. then, you may find out it's something simple and cheap, or at least know what to expect next cost-wise. if you just can't afford to fix it, hang it back like it was and no real harm done. a repair estimate should be free. I understand, but today it usually costs more to fix than replace..unlike the Panasonic we had ..lasted 20 years
redkneck
Wish I had an answer for you William. I would suggest trying an appliance forum (there are some excellent ones out there) but sure sounds like a problem with the touch panel. Many appliances today have diagnostic codes the techs use that can be displayed by entering a sequence of key entries. I would start there. Unfortunately the price you pay vs the reliability of a product are not directly proportional, I can tell you a hundred stories about my parents Kitchenaid problems which is supposed to be top of the line. Kinda thinking the same thing on the touch screen or computer controls John. The thing heats fine, just not at full power, real weird because at 90% it will heat almost as fast as at full power when it was working right, but getting nothing at full power now. Nothing more than an inconvenience really with having to push extra buttons at this point, but kind of concerned about it worsening. how about removing it, taking it to the authorized repairman, and getting an estimate of what's wrong and how much to repair? i say take it to them to avoid a service call. then, you may find out it's something simple and cheap, or at least know what to expect next cost-wise. if you just can't afford to fix it, hang it back like it was and no real harm done. a repair estimate should be free. Won't pay a service call on it Steve, I put all our appliances in myself and can take them out too. I thought someone here might know or have an idea on the problem or a fix. Good idea on taking it in though, will have to call and see where the closest authorized repairperson is located.
wtnhunt
a repair estimate should be free. Closest factory authorized service center, about 30 minutes away, wants $35+tax just to look at the thing and could not give me any indication over the phone what I might be looking at. Would not even tell me what a control board might cost if that might be the problem. Guess we are gonna just continue to use it the way it is unless or until something else goes wrong with it. arrow32
Hmm I know a repair guy that works on our GE stuff at work but he is good on all pretty much. I'll see if I don't see him soon and ask him about some ideas you might be able to try.
